Under the direction of the EVP of Engineering, the Engineering Manager – Houston is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and guiding the mechanical engineering team within a company or organization. This position involves managing a group of mechanical engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful system design, build, and commissioning. The Engineering Manager - Houston plays a crucial role in driving talent development & retention, innovation, efficiency, and quality in the mechanical engineering department while adhering to project deadlines and budget constraints.
Specific responsibilities may include:
Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the Houston engineering team. Provide technical guidance, performance feedback, and support their professional development. Work with Human Resources to develop a talent pipeline and create a team culture which motivates employees towards high contribution and remaining at SIT.
Project Management: Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, from conception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Work in partnership with the Project Manager team lead to ensure departments are functioning well together.
Design and Development: Collaborate with the team to develop innovative and reliable mechanical designs, considering functionality, manufacturability, cost, and safety.
Engineering Standards: Ensure that the team follows industry best practices, codes, regulations, and company-specific engineering standards in all projects.
Resource Allocation: Allocate resources effectively, ensuring optimal utilization of team members' skills and capabilities for different projects.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments such as electrical engineering, shop, sales, and field service, to ensure seamless integration and successful overall project delivery.
Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the mechanical engineering team, identifying areas for enhancement in processes, tools, and methodologies.
Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks and challenges in projects and proactively implement strategies to mitigate them.
Budget Management: Manage the mechanical engineering budget, providing input on equipment needs, resource requirements, and project expenses.
Vendor Management: Work with external vendors, suppliers, and contractors to source components, materials, or services necessary for project execution.
Testing and Validation: Oversee testing and validation activities, ensuring products meet quality and performance standards before final release.
Compliance and Safety: Ensure all mechanical designs and products adhere to relevant safety and regulatory standards.
Partner with sales teams at GCC and Hydraquip (sister companies) to help find and secure systems opportunities at current clients.
Support complete lifecycle of equipment (from design – startup – troubleshooting – service & repair) to build a long-lasting trusted relationship with clients.
Support and participate in the organization’s continual improvement program and conform to ISO 9001 requirements by complying with the Quality Policy and procedures and meeting Quality Management System objectives.

Requirements
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
Fluid Power Certification a plus.
Demonstrated leadership skills and previous experience managing a team of engineers.
Project management experience, with a track record of successful project delivery.
EXPERIENCE
Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in mechanical engineering, with a strong background in product design and development.
Previous experience in hydraulic, electrical or mechanical industries is strongly preferred.
Education as described above may be accepted in lieu of experience.
Experience working in an ISO 9001 environment is considered a plus.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Demonstrated leadership skills and previous experience managing a team of engineers.
Project management experience, with a track record of successful project delivery.
Proficient in CAD and Solidworks software and other relevant engineering tools.
In-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
