What we want

The Research Scientist is responsible for conducting complex independent research into their field of expertise. The Research Scientist will utilize techniques and strategies taught to them by their education and experiences to work towards solving the question presented by their research project; writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications; oversees the preparation and cleaning of worksite; may collaborate with other researchers and/or faculty.

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in a related field

  • 6 years relevant professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in protein science including protein characterization, biochemistry, and protein interactions

  • Demonstrated proficiency in protein production, purification, and protein interaction technologies that include the application of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), 1Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC), Nano Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (nanoDSF) to assess protein stability and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS/QELS) technologies and their application to drug discovery research

  • Demonstrated experience working as a member of multi-disciplinary teams in the support of drug discovery and development where completion of objectives and meeting timelines is dependent upon the applicant’s work product

  • Experience in managing institutional core laboratories or resource centers

  • Demonstrated excellence communication skills including evidence of authorship / co-authorship of research publication, oral presentations at professional meetings and technical workshops and seminars related to protein science technologies

  • Hands-on familiarity with research instrumentation including Cytiva Biacore™ T200 SPR instrumentation and related instruments

Responsibilities

  • Research: Will be responsible for conducting complex independent research into their field of expertise. Utilizes advanced knowledge and skills granted to them by their education and experience to complete research projects in their field of expertise. Oversees the preparation and cleaning of worksite. Organizes worksite and determines what supplies are necessary to continue research in an effective manner. Analyzes research data and summarizes results. Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications. Assists with grant acquisition.

  • Mentoring/Supervision: May assist student researchers, Postdoctoral Research Associates, Assistant Research Scientists, and/or Associate Research Scientists who are working on research related to the project. May supervise assigned staff and/or students.

  • Presentations: Prepares presentation materials on research topics that may be presented to small and/or large groups. Actively participates in the preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors.

  • Data and Collection Management: Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, compiling data, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results. Ensures all electronic data is stored on the program’s networked and redundant data arrays for long-term storage and retention. Maintain a record of laboratory process and findings in a detailed laboratory notebook. Document and interpret results for core collaborators and the principal investigators of grants supporting their work.

  • Meetings and Collaboration: Participate in weekly lab meetings within the Center and other departments at the Texas Medical Center. Plan and attend project specific meetings with core collaborators. Attend outside seminars in field related subjects.

  • Maintenance of Lab Resources: Establish, install, maintain, operate and/or repair research equipment and stocks. Assists with ordering general lab supplies and equipment.
