POSITION OVERVIEW

PURPOSE OF DIVISION
The purpose of Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance, General Maintenance Services Business Unit it is to effectively deliver self-performed maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the Maintenance Mechanic I is to prevent mechanical failure of equipment, to identify and correct safety hazards, and inspect, repair, clean and maintain several types of equipment: pumps, miscellaneous rotating and reciprocating equipment, plumbing equipment (sinks, commodes, urinals, flush valves, and faucets) and machinery throughout the airport facilities. This position may be assigned duties at all Houston Airport System facilities including IAH, HOU, and EFD.
"Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required. Candidates must be able to obtain all security required badge access including Custom Border Patrol access within 6 months from the hire date.”
The Maintenance Mechanic I responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrication and repairs on machinery such as pumps, boilers, air conditioning units, meters, air compressors, backhoes, incinerators, plumbing, trucks and tractors.
Uses hand tools and special equipment such as welding torches to test, repair, and maintain buildings' physical plants and equipment.
May drive to and from work sites.
Reports unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment.
Keeps records of maintenance and repair work performed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make rapid closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fine tolerances with large equipment as an extension of the worker.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the High School level.
Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required. In some departments, may require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

No experience is required.

PREFERENCES
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
