Position Summary:
Rice's Research Support Shop, better known as the Machine Shop, has a full-time team of highly skilled technicians who create precision tools and machines that help Rice scientists complete their research and experiments. The Research Support team provides services ranging from simply drilling a hole to creating complex scientific instruments. Almost every job completed is one-of-a-kind, created to serve a unique purpose in a specific lab for a particular piece of research.
The Machinist III for the Research Support Shop works closely with graduate students and faculty to produce scientific instrument parts and apparatuses for scientific research, working from sketches, detailed drawings or in conference with faculty and graduate students
Workplace Requirements:
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hourly Hiring Range: $26.92 to $33.61, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 3 years of industry experience
- Current machine shop experience including setting up and operating lathes, vertical milling machines, and programming, set up, operating CNC milling machine
Skills:
- Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Grind cutting tools
- Operate lathes, vertical milling machines, saws, belt sanders, and tool grinding
Preferences:
- 8 years of related experience
- Technical or vocational school training preferred
- Experience in research and development machine shop environment
- Some experience with sheet metal fabrication
Essential Functions:
- Creates customized scientific instruments, tools, and parts by precision machining use.
- Lathes, Bridgeport milling machine, saws, belt sander, and tool grinding.
- Make Sheetmetal fabrications using sheet metal shear and sheet metal break.
- Read blueprints, drawings, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work
- Identify multiple surface finishes
- Operate assigned machine (Mill, Lathe) independently with little to no guidance to include applicable set up
- Run multiple types of machines
- Use advanced trade mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings
- Complete all other duties as assigned
