Rice University Lecturer and Costume Shop Manager in Houston, Texas
The Program in Theatre at Rice University invites applications for the position of costume shop manager and lecturer. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching five undergraduate courses each academic year (two fall and three spring) from the area of expertise as well as mentoring and supervising student designers in costumes and oversight of costume construction crews.
The appointment will begin 07/01/2025. This is a full-time position, benefits-eligible, nontenure track lecturer appointment with a 3-3 teaching load and with a salary of $65,000. The initial contract is for two years and renewable upon successful reviews.
The position will provide costume design as well as support for the Theatre Programs two stage productions each academic year. As costume shop manager, the position is responsible for identifying, supervising, and facilitating capital, non-capital, and preventive maintenance issues for the Hamman Hall costume shop.
The Program in Theatre offers a minor degree in Theatre and is a component in the School of Humanities. The Program takes a broad-based approach to understanding the facets of theatre-making through classes in stagecraft (costume construction or theatre technology), acting or design, history of theatre, and a required production practicum.
Applicants should have a record of theatre production experience as well as a strong understanding of the general history, production, practice, theory and criticism of contemporary and classical theatre. Candidates must have an M.F.A. degree in Costume Design or Costume Design and Technology, with professional design and technical experience as well as previous university level teaching.
