POSITION OVERVIEW

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Horticulturist to join its Greenspace Division team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for the instruction on matters and problems concerning horticulture and floriculture. Perform horticultural duties such as planting, pruning, fertilization and other tasks needed for general care and maintenance of planting areas. Recommend utilization of proper pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to field personnel. Keep records on inventory, scheduling and routine maintenance in relation to plantings. Maintain and clean equipment and tools. Perform other duties as requested. Weekend work will occur as requested on a rotational basis, with occasional holidays as well.
WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to extreme weather conditions such as heat/cold, moisture and air pollution. Periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, insect stings, and minor burns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An Associate's degree in Horticulture or a related field is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in horticultural or nursery operations are required.

PREFERENCES:
Candidates with a valid Texas Driver's License
Candidates with a Texas Department of Agricultural or Structural pest control license or must be obtained within 6 months of hire date
Greenhouse management experience
Eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
