Come create chemistry with us!

We are seeking a professional like you who is passionate about the fast-paced and ever-changing world of natural gas. As a Financial / Basis Trader, you will build and maintain a fundamental model of US Gas flows (with a focus on the US Gulf Coast) and identify, execute, & manage financial basis trades in the forward market, using market insights and this extensive analytical framework. Your trade positions will include physical and financial natural gas flat price and basis risk (an additional understanding of financial options is preferred). You will work hand in hand with dedicated physical traders and supply & transportation origination efforts.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your passion for problem solving, nimbleness, and strong understanding of risk/reward. Your dedication to success and discipline will help the gas team manage risk, maximize profits, and ensure natural gas supply for all BASF sites in North America. Your contribution is one of the first steps in creating chemistry for a sustainable future and directly impacts BASF’s bottom line.

As a Financial Trader, you create chemistry by...

  • Building and maintaining a regional Flow Model intended to capture regional supply/demand balances and forecast End of Season storage levels across prompt and future gas seasons.

  • Understanding and being able to project forward Natural Gas supply and demand balances, market trends, and other derived insights.

  • Possessing the ability to develop a Point of View (encompassing the flow model & market insights), identifying actionable trade ideas, and executing on the trade ideas generated to manage physical & financial natural gas price risk, and generate profits.

  • Being adept at framing trade opportunities from a probabilistic perspective, providing scenario analysis to support trading decisions, and evaluations of risks to trading positions. As well as utilizing knowledge of options to assist in developing hedging strategies.

  • Fostering a collaborative, team-oriented workstyle, with a willingness to professionally engage in dialogue and debate with colleagues.

  • Employing strong verbal and written communication skills to ensure clear and effective communications of market fundamentals, positions, and results.

If you...

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or similar discipline. Advanced degree is a plus.

  • Have a minimum of 10 years of relevant commodity experience, with a minimum of 3 years of Natural Gas fundamentals experience.

  • Demonstrate a strong ability to manage large datasets and multiple market intelligence data sources

  • Have proficiency in Excel, Structured Query Language (SQL) or Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)

  • Exhibit a strong working knowledge of North American natural gas fundamentals, an extensive knowledge of US intra and interstate pipelines (especially the Texas/Gulf Coast), and knowledge of Texas/Mexico cross border gas flow dynamics.

  • Possess a proven ability to identify trade structures that extract value using a fundamentals-based market view, augmented with technical analysis to time entry and exits
