UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry(UTSD)invites applications for a part-time (.60 FTE), faculty position in the Department of Periodontics & Dental Hygiene for the Center for Health Promotion (CHP).

The Center for Health Promotion (CHP) Dental Hygiene Faculty will be critical in educating pre-doctoral (DDS) students. They will contribute to shaping the next generation of oral healthcare providers by preparing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide patients with high-quality oral and overall healthcare.

This position’s primary goal is to support the new educational and clinical models at UTSD and the teaching of predoctoral dental (DDS) students, primarily at the Center for Health Promotion (CHP) and other clinic areas. With the emphasis on person-centered comprehensive care, this faculty position will require collaboration with the Director for Health Promotion, dental faculty, as well as other allied healthcare professionals.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The responsibilities of the CHP Dental Hygiene Faculty include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising clinical activities of dental students as part of their periodontal education, including oral hygiene instructions, periodontal instrumentation (prophy, scaling, root planning, and periodontal maintenance), and data collection during comprehensive periodontal evaluations (D0180) and periodontal re-evaluations.

  • Fostering a commitment to patient care and positive clinical outcomes using UTSD’s Standards of Care and evidence-based practice.

  • Ensuring alignment with UTSD’s clinical protocols as they relate to the training and educating of pre-doctoral students in providing patient-centered comprehensive care.

  • Collaborating with colleagues to enhance UTSD’s clinical mission and vision.

  • Promoting professionalism, respectful communication, and ethical behavior.

  • Utilizing effective teaching methods to convey essential concepts related to reducing oral and systemic risk factors, disease prevention, and health promotion.

  • Evaluating student performance in clinical experiences and simulation.

  • Supporting the assessment of student learning by answering their questions and providing constructive feedback for improvement.

  • Serving as a mentor to students, offering guidance and encouragement.

  • Guiding students during clinical care and patient education encounters.

  • Contributing to the development of new educational materials

  • Participating in faculty meetings, committees, and clinical/educational program planning.

  • Staying informed about current trends and advancements in prevention and health promotion.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene, Director for Health Promotion,Assistant Dean for Clinical Education, Associate Dean for Patient Care, or the Dean.

Qualifications:

The selected candidates should be graduates of dental hygiene programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and a registered dental hygienist with a current Texas license.
