Job Description Summary

The Manager of Sustainability Projects and Outreach is a 12-month, full time position that will work collaboratively with the Department of Social Sciences and the Office of Sustainability & Resilience. This position will help shape and support sustainability

efforts at both the departmental level and across the institution. Core responsibilities include: 1) outreach and communications for sustainability degree programs, projects, and initiatives; 2) identifying and supporting projects that increase sustainability performance and engagement; and 3) administrative and logistical support for new and

ongoing sustainability initiatives. This position is in a strategic priority area for the university, so there is opportunity for growth and resources for professional development.

  • Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Outreach (50%)

  • Develop and execute a communication and marketing plan that supports new student recruitment and engagement of existing students and staff.

  • Actively manage websites and pages, including mtu.edu/sustainability.

  • Build and maintain relationships in the campus and community to support experiential learning opportunities for students.

  • Market and assess outreach events for campus and community.

Student engagement (30%)

  • Support student leadership development through tiered programming with diverse populations, including summer youth programs, first year students, advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Assist the Director in ongoing development of a new sustainability focused residential learning community.

  • Advise the Sustainability Demonstration House.

  • Build and manage additional programs to strengthen student engagement in sustainability.

Administrative and Logistical Support (20%)

  • Manage administrative and logistical aspects of sustainability related projects such as faculty-led study abroad programs, the annual COP delegation, and other campus events.

  • Recruit, hire, train, and support student employees.

  • Assist the Director in assessment and reporting via the

  • Sustainability Tracking Assessment, and Reporting (STARS) framework, annual reports, and other methods.

  • Collaborate with campus partners including students, facilities staff, and faculty advance sustainability initiatives and enhance the visibility of achievements.

  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

  • Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Two years of experience or post-secondary education in a sustainability-related field.

  • Demonstrated capacity to take projects from inception to completion.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • We value experience beyond paid employment or formal education, such as community-based projects and voluntary involvement.

  • Demonstrated success in advancing sustainability initiatives.

  • Experience working with staff and faculty in higher education.

  • Project management experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Demonstrated understanding of and passion for sustainability.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Event and program planning skills, including identifying and addressing important details.

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with individuals with diverse

backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

  • Familiarity with basic graphic design, social media, and Google Suite.

  • Experience working collaboratively with undergraduate students.

  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to comply with Michigan Tech vehicle-use

requirements.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills of Content Management Systems for web-based applications.

  • Experience with community development or engagement.

  • Branding and social media experience in a professional setting.

  • Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

  • This position will be collaboratively supervised by the Chair of the Social Sciences Department and the Director of Sustainability and Resilience.

  • The office for this position will be located in the Department of Social Sciences,

with regular meetings with the Director of Sustainability & Resilience in person at

the Office of Sustainability & Resilience (in the library) 1-2 times each week.

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required to support events and student-focused activities.

  • Moving small-to-medium-sized boxes and materials for special events.

  • Driving personal or university vehicles.
