NMS is seeking a Toxicologist to work in their Toxicological Services Department.

Summary The Toxicologist will evaluate analytical results and certify the acceptability of reports. Other main responsibilities include interpretation of results, and responding to clients, laboratory staff, and other in-house departments concerning toxicology-related questions. When required, courtroom testimony is provided.

*Master's Degree + 3 yr. relevant experience with 1 yr. post-graduate experience OR *Ph.D. degree + 1 yr. post-graduate relevant experience *ABFT or ABCC-TC board eligibility or certification is required

III

*Master's Degree + 5 yr. relevant experience with 1 yr. post-graduate experience OR *Ph.D. degree + 3 yr. relevant experience *ABFT or ABCC-TC board eligibility or certification is required

IV

*Master's Degree + 7 yr. relevant experience with 1 yr. post-graduate experience OR *Ph.D. degree + 5 yr. relevant experience *ABFT or ABCC-TC board eligibility or certification is required

*Must have completion of at least 24 semester hours in chemistry including general chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry (to include instrumentation), 1 interpretive science course (e.g., biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, etc.), 1 statistics course, and a graduate degree in a relevant scientific discipline

Toxicologist II Major Duties & Responsibilities Makes final technical and administrative review of data and provided case history prior to the release of reports, assuring result accuracy. Identifies potential laboratory-related issues and makes the appropriate notifications. Reviews litigation packets for acceptability. Responds to questions from Laboratory Operations, Expert Services, and Client Support Services. Evaluates cases in the TOX review queue when assigned. Provides input on policy and organizational improvement. Provides testimony as a witness regarding laboratory processes, the final report, and drug classes and effects, without interpretive testimony. Interacts with the toxicological community via publications, presentations, etc. Prepares interpretation reports and/or provides expert and interpretive testimony of NMS analytical casework. Communicates with Clients, Laboratory Staff, Client and Expert Services, and Toxicologists about toxicology-related matters. Performs specialized laboratory casework and research. Assists laboratory staff in improving and developing methods. Assures high-quality, relevant laboratory data through such processes as laboratory involvement, analytical specification preparation, continuing education, etc. Other duties as assigned. Toxicologist III Major Duties & Responsibilities Performs all duties of Toxicologist II proficiently. Prepares reports and/or gives testimony in Expert Service submissions without analytical casework in conjunction with a Toxicologist IV or V. Assumes DirecTox responsibilities. Other duties as assigned. Toxicologist IV Major Duties & Responsibilities Performs all duties of a Toxicologist III proficiently. Independently prepares reports and/or gives testimony in forensic toxicological matters, both because of NMS and external analytical casework and Expert Service submissions without analytical casework. Increased participation in interdepartmental committees, initiatives, and improvement projects. Takes a proactive and mentorship approach that contributes to the professional development of all department members. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Working knowledge of analytical procedures including a basic understanding of analytical terminology, methods and theory, and methods of data interpretation. Working knowledge of the following techniques: wet chemistry, chromatography (GC, HPLC, IC, etc.); spectrophotometry (UV/VIS, AAS, etc.); and spectrometry (GC/MS, LC/MS, etc.). Working knowledge of pharmacology/toxicology including pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; integration of case-related issues to proper analyses; interpretation of analytical results. Working with applied knowledge of postmortem- and human performance-related issues in toxicology. Strong communication skills - both verbal and written. Ability to communicate and coordinate closely and effectively with Toxicologists, Client and Expert Services Laboratory Operations, and Clients (including physicians, lawyers, and client service representatives from external organizations). Comprehend regulations and SOPs and apply them to work operations. Define and resolve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Physical Demands: Ability to talk, hear, stand, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to manipulate instrument/equipment controls, computer keyboard, office equipment, objects, or tools. Moving from one work location to another to sit and stand, sometimes for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities (with correction) including color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to travel as needed.
