Job Summary and Qualifications

The Trauma Program Director is a full-time position (1.0 FTE) who works in concert with the Trauma Medical Director and hospital leadership to assure optimal trauma patient care services, quality outcomes, and compliance with local, state, and national standards for Trauma Center designation and verification. The Trauma Program Director continually strives to achieve successful outcomes for all care and programs associated with the trauma service, serves as operational director for all internal/external program initiatives and hospital, local, state and American College of Surgeons (ACS) requirements. The Trauma Program Director is closely involved with administrative operations, financial support, clinical services, educational activities, outreach initiatives, and research activities of the Trauma Center. This position maintains responsibility/accountability for 24-hour/7-day management.

100% of the Trauma Program Director’s FTE is dedicated to Trauma Program Leadership which is categorized into 3 major areas: Program Administration, Quality Leadership and Education/Outreach Leadership.

Program Administration 50%

· Maintains oversight of the trauma program

· Manages the operational, personnel, and financial aspects of the trauma program, as appropriate. Assist with the budgetary process for the trauma program.

· Assists in the development and implementation clinical protocols and practice management guidelines

· Serves as a liaison to hospital administration and represents the trauma program on various hospital, local, state, and national committees to enhance and foster optimal care management.

· Service as a liaison to administration and represent the trauma program on hospital and regional committees to enhance trauma care

· Provides oversight of the trauma registry in partnership with the Clinical Data Registry Abstraction Operations Manager.

· Holds current membership in a national or regional trauma organization

· Demonstrates excellence in strategic planning and coordination for the management of the quest for optimal care of the trauma injured across the care continuum.

· Demonstrates outstanding trauma patient advocacy through the use of data and informational findings to develop measurable patient care and injury prevention initiatives.

· Acts as an agent for the Trauma Medical Director to assure compliance with regional, state, and national trauma statutes and regulations.

· Performs administrative functions, include initiating, developing, planning, and evaluating activities of the Trauma Center’s mission of providing optimal trauma care, as defined by the American College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient.

· Assumes responsibility for the Trauma Center’s mission statement, strategic planning, and personnel support.

· Maintains all forms of HIPPA and trauma patient confidentiality.

· Advises all departments on state regulatory standards for trauma care to achieve optimal care processes.

· Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director in the formulation of standards or performance, evaluation, and supervision of the Trauma Center’s clinical support staff.

· Coordinates management across the continuum of trauma care, including the planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.

· (Level I) Demonstrates active involvement in research projects and the analysis and distribution of findings. Facilitates protocol design for accurate data collection, feedback and analysis as applicable for your facility.

· Participates with internal and external disaster management planning. Serves as a member of the hospital disaster management committee.

· Stabilizes the complex network of the many disciplines that work in concert to provide high-quality care. Serves as an internal resource for staff in all departments, and act as an extended liaison for EMS agencies.

· Participates in the implementation and evaluation of programs supporting pre-hospital care, transportation, acute hospitalization, and rehabilitation care issues.

· Supports the trauma program through astute accuracy of all reports and timely submission of data to entities which provide funding for trauma care.

· Conducts Trauma Department meetings in partnership with the Trauma Medical Director.

· Prepares for verification and re-verification as a Trauma Center by maintaining, completing, and organizing supporting documentation such as Trauma Center application(s) and/or PRQ and completing the site verification and designation visits.

· Complies with and assists in adherence of hospital and Trauma Center policies and procedures.

· Assumes responsibility for the development of processes for monitoring and improving the financial performance and resource utilization of the Trauma Center.

Quality Leadership 25%

· Monitor performance improvement activities in conjunction with PI coordinator(s) and Trauma Medical Director

· Assures ongoing monitoring and system re-design to focus on excellence of care.

· Ensures trauma patients receive a continuum of optimal care within the context of the American College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient Guidelines, Joint Commission Standards, and hospital policy and procedures.

· Ensures that the Trauma Registry supports the Trauma PI plan.

· Monitors clinical processes, outcomes, and system issues related to the quality of care provided. Develops quality filters, audits, and case reviews to identify trends and events.

· Develops event resolution activities to address events with opportunities. Monitors and mitigates for future events.

· Assists with the coordination and implementation of the Trauma Quality Management Plan. Participates in case review and implementation and adherence monitoring of practice guidelines.

Education & Outreach Leadership 25%

· Provide educational opportunities for staff development

· Coordinates efforts between local and regional trauma systems, supporting optimal quality of care for adults and children within the context of the American College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient Guidelines, state and regional system regulations, Joint Commission Standards, Trauma Center and hospital Policy and Procedures.

· Participates in local, state and national governmental policy development and supports the corporate government liaison.

· Supports marketing, branding, and community informational development for trauma.

· Provides for professional staff development and direct community trauma education and prevention programs.

· Maintains open lines of communication with regional hospital administrators, physicians, nurses and pre-hospital care providers through site visits, phone calls and letters.

· Provides feedback to referring physicians, nurses and EMS agencies.

· Demonstrates active participation in local, state, and national trauma organizations and committees, where applicable.

· Demonstrates commitment to maintaining market share through patient and consumer education and by improving patient and consumer satisfaction.

Other

· Maintains 36 hours of trauma-related continuing education (CE) during the verification cycle for ACS Centers, or State specific criteria for state designated centers.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

· Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing - Required

• Master’s Degree in Nursing or related health field or within 3 years of hire - Required

• 3+ years experience in Nursing - Required

• 3+ years experience in Trauma Nursing - Preferred

• Experience in Quality/Performance Improvement - Preferred

• Experience in Project Management - Preferred
