Job Description

Health Information Services (HIS) processes patient medical records and releases health information to patients, physicians, and other outside facilities for treatment, payment, or review. HIS is the custodian and gatekeeper for privacy of the organization’s medical records and also generates the coding procedures for data collection, research, and reimbursement. With the widespread computerization of health records and other information sources, including hospital administration functions and health human resources information, health informatics and health information technology are being increasingly used in the health care sector.

As the Oncology Program Abstractor, you will provide oversight and management of oncology patient records, ensuring that the highest standards of confidentiality, sensitivity and professionalism are upheld among our cancer research and treatment activities. Specifically, you will coordinate the identification, abstraction, and maintainance of all oncology records for patients by utilizing the tumor registry data system. Analyze registry data and disseminate information in accordance with professional ethics. Coordinate research requests for short and long term research projects. We are looking for someone meticulous and systematic, with excellent organizational and analytical skills and a commitment to delivering the highest quality health care to Hawai‘i’s people.

Minimum Qualifications: Must meet one of the minimum qualifications (education or experience) -

High school or equivalent including two (2) years of varied health information experience and/or one (1) year experience in the use of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) CPT-4 coding, and the staging of cancers.

OR

Associate’s Degree in Health Information Technology from an accredited program and Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification or eligible.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree. Certified Tumor Registrar.
