GAI is seeking a Substation Physical Assistant Designer Manager for substation related work. This position will perform substation physical design, technical guidance/mentoring/supervising of staff, design & 3D model reviews, and implementation of all aspects relating to substation physical design services.  The successful candidate will manage a team of CAD Operators/Designers as well as work on various substation engineering projects including detailed design for substation projects up to 500kV. The successful candidate will have the ability to work at a GAI office, hybrid or fully remote. Job Duties:

Manage, design, and perform QA/QC checks related to technical activities including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Manage, train, and mentor CAD Operators/designers to develop high quality project deliverables.
  • Responsible for the oversite of all CAD Design related discussions as well as coordination with other disciplines CAD leads.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews on drawing packages including 3D models and 2D drawing sets for adherence to client standards.
  • Document QA/QC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.
  • Develop and/or revise 3D models and/or 2D drawings for one-line, physical arrangements, grounding, conduit, lightning protection, BOM, etc.
  • Develop lightning shielding, lighting, and conduit fill calculations using provided templates, Bill of Materials, etc.
  • Perform and manage 3D model creation in accordance with client workflows & standards.
  • Utilize and manage others in the usage of file management software in accordance with client workflows and standards.
  • Create and manage internal 3D model library when necessary.
  • Coordinate with external entities to acquire the required equipment models when necessary.
  • Develop design specifications including the overall bill of materials.
  • Order long-lead item materials.
  • Travel to other offices meet with clients and attend project specific meetings on an as needed basis.
  • Manage tasks on assigned projects in accordance with GAI's high standards of project management.
  • Manage and assist with the development of scope of services and cost estimates for substation projects.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgment to determine optimal solutions.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and/or Microstation.
  • Experience in the use of Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault.
  • Experience in the use of Autodesk Inventor iLogic, P4I and Navisworks Manage (preferred).
  • Must be flexible to handle shifting deadlines and scope changes.
  • Must have resource management skills and ability to identify project barriers and mitigate them without schedule impacts.

     

General Characteristics

Assisting the Project Manager as needed on aspects of the project, well-rounded in aspects of consulting and the industry.

Minimum Years of Experience

10 years of Substation Physical design experience in projects ranging up to 500kV (preferred).

Education

Associate degree from an accredited Technical School or equivalent experience.

Certification/Licensure

Driver's License

Technical Responsibilities

Beginning to provide oversight of task managers' tasks; Coordination of project tasks; Reviews project documents; Adjust project plan as changes are made.

Project and Task Management

Responsible for task management and adherence to deadlines and scope.

Management, Supervision, and Guidance

Hires staff; Manages performance and career paths; Coordinates assign ents to CADD staff from project team; Manages 1 to 3 staff.

Communication, Teamwork, and Leadership

Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staff; clients Project Managers and various Department Managerial Staff, especially with client communications; interact with clients at regular project meetings.

Qualifications

Education Bachelors of Drafting (preferred) Associates of Drafting (required)

Experience 10 years: substation physical design, technical guidance/mentoring/supervising of staff, design & 3D model reviews, and implementation of all aspects relating to substation physical design services. (required)

Licenses & Certifications Driver's License (required)
