In this vital role you will report into the Global EHS Safety and Risk Management Group and will be responsible the mitigation of risk across the Amgen Project Portfolio, driving change and implementing innovative and robust systems for managing EHS project design review, risk assessment and process safety management.

The Sr. Manager will ensure EHS project design and requirements for small and large molecule drug substance, drug product and laboratory facilities and operations are met and incorporated into the project execution lifecycle (Design, Construction and Startup). The Sr. Manager will support and/or lead Process Safety and Risk Assessment program activities.

Primary functions of the Sr. Manager include;

Owns and improves key systems and programs, such as EHS Design Review, Risk Assessment, EHS Change Management, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, etc.

  • Act as an SME and/or lead complex or particularly high hazard Risk Assessment using process hazard evaluation techniques such as What If, HAZOP, FMEA etc. to support site EHS and Engineering deliverables

  • Act as primary EHS representative to assigned complex or large projects to provide EHS Safety Engineering formal review at Concept, BOD, Detailed Design and ORR project stages

  • Review and provide EHS input on typical project documents including process diagrams, P&ID’s, equipment specifications, design drawings etc

  • Develop, coach and mentor EHS network colleagues in higher level Risk Assessment techniques and skills and some technical aspects of high hazard processes or activities (e.g. handling hazardous materials, use of high potency materials, control measures for handling exposable dusts or vapors, typical testing for reactive chemistry, electrical safety etc.)

  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of time.

Safety Culture:

  • Develop and lead initiatives to ensure that Risk Management is embedded as a core skill and value among key Amgen personnel

Compliance:

  • Act as a key partner with Engineering Safety Code Compliance process, to drive ongoing improvements in this process in Amgen projects

  • Lead with Corporate Audit process on key program areas to assess compliance and regulatory inspection readiness

  • Lead continuous improvement of assigned Amgen core EHS programs and processes to ensure effectiveness and compliance

Liaisons:

  • Reports to EHS Director

  • Participates on EHS Global Network Teams

  • Represents EHS on assigned Engineering and Operations Networks

  • Interacts with EHS Global and Function Leadership

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Corporate Services experience

Or

Master’s degree and 4 years of Corporate Services experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of Corporate Services experience

Or

Associate’s degree and 10 years of Corporate Services experience

Or

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Corporate Services experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Higher Degree in, chemical engineering, engineering, chemistry, biology or other science areas, or environmental, safety, or industrial hygiene

  • 15+ years of experience in Risk Management, including developing and implementing EHS risk management programs in biotech/pharma

  • Strong understanding of chemical, biological, pharmaceutical manufacturing, process development and laboratory operations

  • Knowledge of European and/or US regulations or both as they pertain to pharma/ biotech operations

  • Strong technical understanding of typical project documents including process diagrams, P&ID’s, equipment specifications, design drawings etc

  • Qualification in Process Hazard Analysis, including one or more of Hazop, What-If, PrHA, FMEA methodologies

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
