Responsible for determining the total cost of a construction project. Reads and understands building plans, specs, and other documents to estimate a place to start for compiling a list of materials needed to construct the building. Visits the construction sites to come up with an accurate estimate. Determines what pieces of equipment will be needed to complete the project and how long the construction team will need to do their work. Estimates labor hours and equipment rates accurately. Gives line-by-line costs for the types and amounts of materials needed to build a structure. Must be familiar with the local market for materials. Chooses the right materials for the construction project. Once the material, labor and equipment are planned out, the estimator has the important job of adjusting costs to account for profit, overhead and indirect costs.
