Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA) located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,701 -$5,834/Mon.
DUTIES:
Assists with maintaining, monitoring, and modernizing the telescope control system (TCS) and related observatory software, including maintaining and writing software for remote observing, star catalogs, and updating observing target ephemerides. Maintains and updates software required for remote observing, star catalogs, and updating observing target ephemerides. Works with Telescope Operators by providing operations support and helping to improve TCS interfaces, IRTF electrical, mechanical engineers and daycrew for troubleshooting of observatory systems. Secondary duties include software development assistance for observing instrument data acquisition systems and instrument graphical user interface (GUI). Stays abreast of new developments in observatory software, available products, attends workshops and national conferences.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Up to
one (0-1) year of experience as a programmer, software engineer, or application engineer.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of computer science. Fundamental knowledge of software development, Unix systems programming, C/C++ programming, software systems and design. Basic understanding of Linux system administration. Basic understanding of file formats used in astronomy, handling of astronomical data.
ABILITIES and SKILLS
Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to plan, direct, and implement complex systems and analysis programs. Demonstrated ability in establishing working relationships within team or crew. Ability to develop and deploy software and administer Linux servers or equivalent in a user interface. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission.
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Post Offer/Employment Condition:
Must be able to occasionally work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
