Amazon Web Services is hiring a Sr. Product Design engineer for our Electrical Solutions Product Engineering team. The product engineering team is a part of a global engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation for products used within our rapidly expanding data center foot print. This position can be based out of Herndon VA, Austin TX, Columbus OH or Seattle WA.

The Product engineering team at Amazon works to design and develop resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution products and systems. We are seeking a Sr. Design engineer with hands experience in new product design and development of electrical power distribution equipment such as Low Voltage Switchgear, Power Distribution Cabinets or LV panel boards. If you can design electrical power distribution product/s and equipment, help to test and successfully test the products as per latest codes and standards using third party test laboratories then you will be good fit. You will directly lead product design and development and be a part of the process from concept to implementation. You must be capable of defining equipment specifications and evaluating the merit of design changes. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in the product design field. As a product engineer at Amazon, you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including engineering service providers, manufacturers, vendors, inspectors, third party testing labs and contractors.

Amazon has a global presence. Travel will be necessary but shouldn’t be more than 30%. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel may be necessary. Your contribution could consist of leading international projects and could require developing engineering information packages. An understanding of international electrical product design requirements is helpful but not necessary.

Key job responsibilities

• Work with internal partner teams including Operations, Quality, Availability, Reliability, Safety, Hardware Engineering and Integrated Facilities to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design.

• Lead new product design, development and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters including but not limited to switchgear (low or medium voltage), power distribution cabinets, transformers and panels.

• Creation of designs which exceed quality requirements defined by internal quality and reliability teams while delivering a positive return on investment for the business.

• Develop Capex and Opex spending budgets taking into account development costs with vendors, prototyping needs, testing and specialized tooling requirements.

• Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2 and 3 supply chain resiliency.

• Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing.

• Create design documentation package including submittal, 3D model, assembly shop drawings and part drawings as necessary for manufacturing.

• Validate design through prototype builds, pre-production builds and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.

• Supports the Principal Engineering and Hardware Engineering teams to design and develop cutting edge concepts into new products.

• Ingest design documentation into AWS’ Product Lifecycle Management tool and maintain design documentation through the full new product development process.

• Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products.

• Ability to provide support for manufacturing activities for the new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations.

• Support of Data Center Operations including failure mode and root cause analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting support, and operating procedure review.

• Be a leader within the product development team as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center.

• Having fun while offering creative, out of the box solutions.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering.

• 8+ years of experience with leading new product design, development, product certification and manufacturing support of Low Voltage (LV) distribution products for data center applications with focus on switchgear, switchboards and panelboards.

• 8+ years of knowledge and able to interpret electric code NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, ANSI C37

• 8+ years of demonstrated track record of design documentation creation including 3D models, submittals, assembly and part drawings and ingestion into Product Lifecycle Manager.

• 8+ years of experience validating design through prototype builds, pre-production builds and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• The ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.

• Familiarity of product validation process by testing and proven experience for product certification testing by third party lab.

• Knowledge of typical data center designs/architectures, and be following industry design trends.

• Demonstrated indirect leadership skills of junior engineers through successful new product launches.

• Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into prototyping/manufacturing.

• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.

• Ability to travel up to 30%, including internationally.
