Amazon Security Engineer, Software Engineering, AWS Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Herndon, Virginia

Description

The Resilience & Technology team in the AWS Security Operations Center (SOC) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Security Engineer (Automation) to design, build, and optimize reliable security automation tools that enhance our ability to detect, respond, and mitigate security threats across Amazon's infrastructure.

In this crucial role, you will collaborate closely with Software Engineers, Industry Specialists, and Product Managers to understand security requirements and translate them into robust automated solutions. You will architect secure data models and workflows, build efficient security data ingestion and processing pipelines, and implement automated security controls and validation processes that enable advanced use cases such as threat detection, incident response, and proactive risk mitigation.

You'll get to leverage the full power and breadth of Amazon technologies, including cutting-edge Generative AI capabilities, to build innovative security automation services that drive continuous improvement in Amazon's security posture. With your strong security engineering expertise and passion for automation, you will empower the AWS SOC to stay ahead of evolving threats.

Key job responsibilities

  • You are considered a technical leader on your team. You engage autonomously with product and system owners to help create, build and innovate security operations.

  • You proactively identify risks and bring them to the attention of your manager, customers, and stakeholders with plans for mitigation before they become roadblocks. You know when to escalate.

  • Collaborate with software engineers to incorporate security-centric design principles, identify potential security risks, and provide guidance on secure architecture patterns

  • You communicate ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, to all types of audiences. You are able to write narratives and strategic documentation.

  • You work successfully with customers, leaders, and other engineering teams. You foster a constructive dialogue, harmonize discordant views, and lead the resolution of contentious issues (influence and build consensus).

  • You define metrics to measure team progress, customer experience, solution quality, and operational excellence.

  • Design, implement, and maintain security-focused components within the broader software solutions, such as access control mechanisms, threat detection, and incident response workflows

  • Develop and maintain security-focused automation tools and services, such as those used for user risk identification, access management, and incident response

  • Provide operational support for the team's security-focused software solutions

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of programming in Python, Ruby, Go, Swift, Java, .Net, C++ or similar object oriented language experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • Experience implementing security solutions at the business division level or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of any combination of the following: threat modeling experience, secure coding, identity management and authentication, software development, cryptography, system administration and network security experience

  • Experience with AWS products and services

  • Knowledge of system security vulnerabilities and remediation techniques, including penetration testing and the development of exploits or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
