Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Worker

*The Primary Reason Why Classification Exists To provide manual to semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and repair of City facilities, grounds, buildings, and equipment * Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs varied manual to semi-skilled tasks involving the building trades. Emphasis of the work is on providing maintenance support roles to skilled trades personnel and/or providing routine maintenance and repair in which no trades experience is required. The classification also provides grounds maintenance services for the City including mowing, weeding, spraying, and other grounds maintenance functions. Work is assigned by a supervisor or skilled trades employee and is evaluated on the basis of dependability, initiative, timeliness, and quality of work performed. ** Illustrative Examples of Work Performs general maintenance support work on equipment and facility maintenance and repair activities, and as a support assistant to skilled trades and mechanical maintenance and repair personnel Performs various building maintenance tasks involving one or more maintenance trades such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, HVAC, welding and electrical work Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, weeding, cutting limbs, or spraying pesticides (under direction of a licensed pesticide license) Maintains heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; changes filters; installs duct work and replaces parts If trained, may assist in preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment including minor repairs on automobiles, fire engines, tractors, motorized sanitation equipment, heavy construction equipment and landscaping equipment; may also perform tune ups, checking lights, tires, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc, if trained Operates lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, welding units and other hand tools Drives truck to pick up parts, supplies, and materials and/or workers to and from job sites Serves as manual labor to put up signs, barriers, shovel sand/ice, spread mulch, and other tasks; may be assigned to work in solid waste collection as required Performs related tasks as required
