Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range

$121,100.00 - $199,800.00

What Is the Opportunity?

Under general direction, this position is responsible for delivery of expert engineering services that assist in the resolution of Special Liability Group claims and coverage disputes. Directs the work of the Special Liability Group engineering unit, ensuring that technical data sources are updated and unit members maintain technical currency on emerging issues and science. Works on the most complex technical issues or problems. This job is a supervisor.

What Will You Do?

  • Reviews and interprets technical reports produced by external consultants within the context of applicable federal and state regulations. Provides technical counsel to Environmental Claim staff and attorneys.

  • Researches and responds to SLG's most complex technical questions in a timely and effective manner. Prepares and presents technical reports as necessary.

  • Participates in remediation site visits, settlement discussions and mediations related to the most complex pollution claims. Serves as resident expert on technical issues, providing range of options with varying outcomes and influencing positions in settlement discussions and mediations.

  • Maintains technical information (causative agent data, consultant database, industry standard operating procedures, company standards, etc.) for SLG. Maintains current data on state and federal regulations, technical advances, and emerging issues. Develops and maintains technical currency in Industrial Hygiene, Pollution and Hazardous Waste disciplines.

  • Assists management in tailoring policy language and assessing impact of regulatory changes.

  • Works with Environmental Claim staff and insureds to select technical consultants to assess damages and/or provide defense testimony on complex cases.

  • Develops technical training sessions for Environmental Claim staff; assists/presents training material.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • PREFERRED EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in Engineering or technical field and 10+ years of experience at a senior project manager level in consulting or in industrial Engineering, Health, & Safety capacity.

  • PREFERRED COMPETENCIES / PROFICIENCY LEVELS

  • General Knowledge of environmental claim handling processes and techniques.

  • PREFERRED LICENSING

  • Any of the following certificates / designations are preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Professional Geologist (PG)

  • Licensed Environmental Professional (LEP)

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

What is a Must Have?

  • REQUIRED EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical field and at least 10 years of experience at a senior project manager level in consulting or in industrial Engineering, Health, & Safety capacity.

  • REQUIRED COMPETENCIES / MINIMUM PROFICIENCY LEVELS

  • Advanced Communications skills - Makes complex technical information and recommendations understandable and clear to audiences with varied levels of technical knowledge.

  • Advanced Influencing skills - influences others to take action on recommendations.

  • Advanced Listening skills

  • Advanced Analytical Skills - Ability to interpret, synthesize and apply complex technical data, often from several sources, to address particular business issues or problems. Develops modified or new methods or techniques to solve problems.

  • Advanced Resource Management Skills - Effectively utilizes resources outside Travelers to achieve results. Well organized; advanced time management skills with the ability to effectively manage/coach staff and simultaneously handle a variety of complex assignments.

  • Thorough knowledge of: (1) hazardous properties of and health effects of chemical products and constituents; (2) industrial hygiene; (3) groundwater hydrology; (4) contaminant fate and migration; and (5) pollution remediation practices, techniques, costs and contract structure.
