The Department of Human Services, Bureau of Hearings and Appeals is seeking a Legal Assistant 1 to join us in our Administrative Region. The Bureau is the entity within the Department of Human Services charged with receiving, processing, conducting, and adjudicating administrative appeals and hearings in a fair, unbiased, and timely manner. We do so in accordance with State and Federal regulations. The volume of appeals that the Bureau processes annually means that we are a fast-paced and team-oriented environment!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Legal Assistant 1, you will be tasked with legal clerical work including the processing and scheduling of appeals and fair hearings involving actions taken by both the Department of Human Services and the PA Department of Aging. You will be responsible for reviewing legal documents, correspondence, and decisions written by the Bureau's Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). You will have the opportunity to provide legal clerical support for ALJs and Legal Assistant 2s in the Department of Human Services (Department) Bureau of Hearings and Appeals (BHA). You will be expected to process appeals in a timely manner and ensure they are in compliance with regulations.

Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment Free Parking! Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the required probationary and training period. Your work assignments will primarily take place in the office. However, telework may be available based upon individual eligibility and the operational needs of the Bureau. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. Salary:Starting Salary is non-negotiable. Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $39,785 (before taxes). QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training. You must be able to perform essential job functions. Legal Requirements: This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
