SUMMARY STATEMENT The Assistant Coach position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach with all aspects of running a college sports team/program. Responsibilities include recruitment, practice management, game management, academic monitoring and fundraising. Hagerstown Community College participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS A. The Athletic Team Assistant Coach reports directly to and is responsible to The Director of Athletics, Exercise Science and Health. B. The position provides supervision to student athletes. C. The Athletic Team Assistant Coach coordinates most closely with the Head Coach and the Director of Athletics, Exercise Science and Health. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assists the Head Coach in all aspects of athletic program development. A. Works within HCCs and the Athletic Departments policies and procedures to accomplish goals. B. Demonstrate values of a life-long learner and focuses on student success academically before team success. C. Assist the Head Coach with recruitment of student athletes from HCCs service area that are capable of benefiting from a community college education and athletic program. 1. Assess the physical abilities, academic background and personal character of the senior athletes in HCCs service area. 2. Initiate personal contact with the high school coaches and each athlete. D. Assist the Head Coach in conducting well organized practices and provides for the physical conditioning and skill training for each athlete. E. Monitor academic progress and participation in an academic support program for student athletes. F. Develop an understanding of student financial aid options and partner with the financial aid department to obtain updates that may impact player eligibility. G. Assist athletes in transferring to a four-year institution in cooperation with the Coordinator of Academic Advising. H. Serve as a positive role model for student athletes. I. Must use the dedicated service approach and a high level of respect, tact and courtesy in dealing with student athletes, other coaching staff, officials, college staff members and the community. J. Develop, with the support of the Director of Athletics, Exercise Science and Health, a relationship with faculty to communicate and interact in an appropriate manner to ensure student success. K. Possess good work habits such as punctuality, attendance, dependability, cooperation and enthusiasm. L. Be familiar with college policies and has a professional knowledge of the employee, student and student worker handbooks as well as the academic and college calendars. Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE College Degree preferred; Two years related experience. CPR certification and a valid drivers license are required. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Excellent communication skills, ability to handle both themselves and the student athletes in an appropriate manner which is in line with college expectations. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with administrative staff, deans, faculty, coaches, student athletes and the general public.
