Description of Job
Colorado Parks and Wildlife is accepting resumes for a temporary position at the Pitkin State Fish Hatchery. The hatchery is located at 9200’ above sea level, 25 miles northeast of Gunnison, CO. The hatchery raises and plants a variety of sub-catchable and catchable salmonids, including kokanee salmon, rainbow and cutthroat trout. Hours of operation are 7:00am to 3:30pm, seven days a week. This is an opportunity to get hands-on experience in the field of salmonid fish culture. Duties include proper handling and feeding fish, cleaning fish tanks and raceways, grounds keeping, building cleaning and maintenance, loading fish onto stocking trucks, equipment repair, riding along to assist on fish plants, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
Must have a valid driver’s license and have experience operating 4x4 vehicles
Must be able to lift 75 lbs
Must have experience operating small gas-powered equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers and power washers
Must have experience operating power tools such as electric drills and power saws
Must be able to work outside in inclement weather at high altitude (9200’)
Must be able to work 40 hours per week and some weekends
Must have an interest in working with fish and perform as a part of a small team
Successful completion and passing of background screening may be required for placement in this position
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Pursuing or have successfully obtained a college degree in a natural resources field
Prior aquaculture experience or fish handling skills
Experience operating grounds keeping equipment or machinery
Small engine maintenance and/or repair skills
Carpentry, welding, plumbing and mechanical experience
Experience handling and applying chemicals (cleaning, disinfecting or fish-culture related chemicals)
