The Director of the TRIO Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program will serve as a department head within the Division of Academic Affairs in The University Student Success Office ( USSO ) and will report directly to the Executive Director for TRIO Programs.

The Director will serve as the immediate supervisor for the TRIO Ronald E. McNair project. The director will assume primary responsibilities for organizing, coordinating and directing staff efforts for carrying out required project services and maintaining effective work relationships among employees and between staff units.

The Director will be responsible for ensuring that activities and services are provided in accordance with institutional, state and federal policies. This individual should be sensitive to and knowledgeable of the needs of students from first-generation, low-income families and otherwise disadvantaged backgrounds.

In addition, the director must be capable of utilizing the resources of the program, the institution and the community in generating options that are adequate to meet the needs of project participants.

The Director will also be the primary Grant Writer for the TRIO Ronald E. McNair grant at the end of each 5-year Grant Cycle.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The McNair Program Director is responsible for the successful execution of the Department of Education funded TRIO Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program at NCATSU . The purpose of the McNair project is to guide and mentor program participants in research activities and graduate school preparation. The McNair Scholars Program prepares first generation, low-income and underrepresented University students to apply for and gain admittance to PhD programs.

Requirements:

  • Doctoral Degree required, preferably in higher education administration, student development, counseling, social work, guidance or education or STEM or related related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, or similar projects or programs for diverse student populations required

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in higher education program management; budget management; program development; staff/personnel supervision; evaluation and reporting required. Reporting and compliance with federal regulations preferred.

  • Minimum of three (3) years collegiate teaching and/or administrative experience; including working with underrepresented students preferred.

Preferred:

  • Experience in collegiate teaching

  • Experience in collegiate administration

  • Experience in publication of research materials or working with federal TRIO programs

  • Experience with academic, career and personal counseling/coaching, plus financial literacy

  • Experience facilitating graduate school readiness workshops

  • Familiarity with the PhD application and enrollment process, including graduate admission essays

  • Knowledge of the educational, social, and cultural patterns and needs of disadvantaged students and methods available to meet these needs.

  • Knowledge of barriers to post baccalaureate education faced by disadvantaged students

  • Knowledge of doctoral program admissions processes and practices

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of administrative organization and management of educational opportunity programs.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, rules and regulations

  • Ability to develop budgets and monitor expenditures

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with faculty, campus officials, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to plan, supervise and evaluate the work of others

  • Ability to collect and analyze data and conduct internal Program evaluations (formative and summative)

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple priorities and functions.

  • Expertise in using technology and databases

  • Expertise with student longitudinal data tracking methods

  • Experience with student support program development and implementation

  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation

  • Experience or training in student retention, development and transition to doctoral work

  • Experience or training in academic and financial counseling

  • Experience in terminal degree attainment

  • Experience developing, conducting, and disseminating independent research

  • Experience navigating and nurturing mentor/student research relationships

  • Success connecting students to undergraduate and graduate opportunities

  • Good written and verbal communication, including demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills are essential

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
