Job Description

Counsels patients and their families regarding mode of inheritance, risk for recurrence and availability of cancer testing and prenatal diagnosis for specific genetic disorders. Interviews and counsels parents and prospective parents regarding both genetic and non-genetic problems, recommends screening procedures and tests to be performed on blood, amniotic fluid and chronic villi. Presents lectures to medical and community groups.

Job Responsibility

  • Interviews patients, their families and prospective parents referred by obstetrician and/or physician to discuss genetic background as it relates to their future offspring.

  • Maintains records pertaining to amniocentesis and chronic villus sampling.

  • Interviews prospective parents with repeated instances of fetal wastage (miscarriage).

  • Performs counseling and carrier screening for gene carrier status as well as for other genetic diseases as required.

  • Interviews adults with known and unknown genetic syndromes and/or genetic disease, or parents of children with genetic syndromes or disease.

  • Discusses possibility of pre-symptomatic screening when appropriate.

  • Attends case conference with entire genetic team to discuss patient cases and review problems.

  • Attends Peer Group Meetings with genetic counselors.

  • Acts as preceptor to the Graduate Students interning in the Medical Genetics Program.

Job Qualification

  • Master's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience, required.

The salary range for this position is $75,020-$126,250/year
