Job Summary

The Accessibility Coordinator oversees the implementation of academic accommodations and specialized support for students with disabilities with a focus on students on the Autism spectrum. Reviews documentation of a student’s disability and make recommendations for accommodations. Provide specialized support to the needs of neurodiverse students, including but not limited to, academic and social support and problem solving while fostering skill building for college students. This position will be responsible for providing support to students’ at the three campus locations and the ATC .

Required Qualification(s)

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in assisting students with disabilities in higher education.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to address student concerns in a tactful and respectful manner, adhering to FERPA guidelines.

  • Possess organizational and project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks.

  • Proven commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

    Desired Qualification(s)

  • Background and ability to decipher and interpret psychological and/or medical data in order to offer explanation and suggest related accommodations.

  • Familiarity with use of assistive technology, software, and vendors serving this population.

  • Experience providing accommodations to students with disabilities in higher education.

  • Familiarity with third party supports, such as sign language interpreting, and its licensure and regulations that govern ADRC level of support.

  • Knowledge of disability culture, local service agencies and laws/rules/regulations applicable to serving students with disabilities in higher education, such as the ADA , ADAAA , section 504, 508, etc.

  • Bilingual Spanish

Summary of Essential Functions

Student Customer Service – 55%

  • Interpret documentation, such as psycho-educational evaluations and medical documentation and make recommendations for accommodations and adaptive technology.

  • Participate in a committee review of documentation, making suggestions for academic accommodations.

  • Conduct beginning of semester Faculty Notification Letter ( FNL ) meetings with student to arrange for academic accommodations through AIM /myADRC.

  • Oversee accommodations provision, troubleshooting and problem solving as needed.

  • Act as a liaison between the student and faculty, particularly in areas of neurodiversity.

  • Assist with the coordination of accommodations at the Grayslake, Lakeshore, Southlake Campuses and the Advanced Technology Center.

  • Meet individually and with groups of students on the Autism spectrum to determine individualized needs, as well as opportunities to enhance academic and social skills through established structured activities.

  • Hold monthly forum for students on the spectrum to collaborate and problem solve.

  • Research future trends in neurodiversity and recommend appropriate technology and/or service adaptations given students’ needs.

Departmental Operations 35%

  • Maintain communication with the Director of the Access & Disability Resource Center ( ADRC ) on progress, issues and concerns of the students.

  • Act as resource for student and faculty in area of neurodiversity as it pertains to students on the autism spectrum.

  • Monitor students on the spectrum progress, create semester reports related to the population, and create opportunities for college advancement in serving this population.

  • Serve on CLC committees and departmental tabling events as directed to foster awareness of neurodiversity and enhance welcoming atmosphere for this population.

  • Coordinate and lead new departmental initiatives related to neurodiversity, emphasizing skill building, social skill enhancement, and academic success.

  • Assist department in successful transition efforts for students on the spectrum, including community based efforts surrounding this population.

  • Assist other specialists in the provision of academic accommodations, including, but not limited to, note taking acquisition, proctoring exams, equipment management, etc… as needed.

Other 10%

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of ADRC .

  • Perform any and all other duties assigned that support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of College of Lake County and goals of the department, division, and unit of appointment.
