University of Michigan Health-West (Formally Metro Health) is looking forĀ  K9 Security Officer.

The K9 Handler has all of the same responsibilities as a security officer with additional responsibilities that come with being a K9 Handler. The Security Officer ensures a safe and secure environment for employees, physicians, visitors, patients, and property of UM Health West and its subsidiaries. Enforces all UM Health West policies, within the context of legal limitations and authority. Provides security services and support to UM Health West through adequate protection of UM Health West property and safety for patients, employees, and visitors. Provides a welcoming and resourceful presence for patients, families, friends, and visitors. Requires outstanding communication and problem-solving skills, exceptional knowledge of the hospital's mission and values and has a passion for excellence. Displays a can-do attitude in a highly visible position requiring a professional presence.

  • Familiarity with standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including email. E-learning, and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential job functions.
  • Able to satisfy house and care for a K9, 24 hours per day/7 days per week.
  • Able to lift and carry a 90 lb. dog.
  • Possess physical fitness standard necessary to complete the initial K9 certification.
  • Maintain physical fitness standards required for K9 handler certification and ongoing certification and competence.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation.
  • Physical mental and emotional ability to execute duties.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance standards.
  • Ability to successfully complete training in Aerosol Subject Restraint (ASR), Handcuffing, Pressure Point Control Tactics, within 3 months of hire date.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Provide response to calls where the presence of a K9 Team is likely to aid in a favorable resolution.

Participate in K9 team public relation appearances and educational demonstrations.

Use K9 for explosive detection when necessary, including assistance to outside organizations / agencies.

Ensure public safety, protect UM Health West assets and function as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.

Work with medical staff, de-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations; help maneuver persons who may be combative, intoxicated or unconscious; restrain individuals as needed.

Stationary, mobile and foot patrol responsibilities

Patrol the UM Health-West hospital and off-site health system buildings and monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems.

Detect safety hazards and criminal elements.

Use customer service skills and inclusive mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members.

Maintain confidentiality in all matters.

Prepare incident and security reports.

Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrol.
