Job Summary
Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer for our Goleta, CA facility. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead design efforts and provide technical direction at the platform and system level. The candidate would be involved with the design, fabrication, and modification of mechanical and/or electromechanical components, sub-systems, and systems. They will also evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production/customer requirements for new or improved products or services.
The candidate must possess the ability to complete a technical project independently; mentor and coach other engineers; and work cross-functionally to coordinate resolution of technical issues and implementation of technical improvements. In addition, the candidate shall demonstrate consistent good judgement and will be able to effectively communicate with engineering and management stakeholders. Finally, the candidate should thrive in a fast-paced environment of rapid prototyping and embrace agility and outside the box thinking.
Job Responsibilities
Responsible for participation and leadership on cross-functional, multi-site development teams that include Systems, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, and Specialty Engineers
Learn and fully understand the requirements, specifications, and customer's expectations of system or subsystem, and lead a project team to develop designs to best support requirements
Interact and communicate clearly (written and oral) with technical management, other professionals, technicians, support personnel, program management, and other customers as required to coordinate, recommend, and confer regarding technical activities and progress
Evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services and investigate solutions to product or process problems
Perform the design, development, modification, analysis, and documentation of various mechanical systems
Support design completion, fabrication and modification of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical components, sub-systems and systems
Lead mechanical integration at the platform and system level
Support integration testing and other related engineering and marketing demonstration events
Use computer-aided design tools to create and update integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE mechanical modeling and drawing solutions
Job Responsibilities Part II
Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel, including mentoring and coaching junior engineers
Provide labor estimates and schedule input for design assignments
Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
Participate in the preparation of technical proposals
Attend appropriate engineering, customer, or business meetings
Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field and 8 years of relevant experience
Knowledge of 3D CAD systems such as Creo Parametric CAD, Inventor, SolidWorks or NX
Experience applying GD&T standard ASME Y-14.5-2009
Management or demonstrated leadership experience required
Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment
Ability to define and complete technical projects independently
Must possess excellent analytical and communication skills, written and oral
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
Hands-on mechanical assembly or fabrication experience preferred (professional or hobby).
Knowledge of military standards, including but not limited to MIL-STD-810, MIL-S-901, MIL-STD-167-1A, MIL-STD-1472 is a plus
Experience in various prototyping methods and approaches is a plus
U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
The expected pay scale for this position is $116,786.00/year - $181,311.00/year. Should the level, location, or scope of the position change during the hiring process, the pay scale may be modified accordingly. When extending an offer of employment, Leonardo DRS considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position; any Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education/training, certifications, and key skills; internal equity; and market and business considerations.
