These documents must be specifically attached to the requisition for which you are applying. * The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Aquatic Biologist I, to perform the following duties: This position assists the Fisheries Dependent Investigations Project leader to conduct sampling of commercial fisheries catches of marine organisms at sea and dockside, process associated biological samples, maintain sampling gear, enter, and audit sampling data, and supports acoustic telemetry and fisheries research studies. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Quantify catches of commercial and recreational fishermen at sea and dockside by arranging trips and visits. 2. Accurately measure and sub-sample catch and bycatch in these fisheries. 3. Collect biological and other information and sample in response to specific priorities for the use in stock assessments and management decisions. 4. Provide field support for acoustic telemetry studies and other fishery research. 5. Provides field support for the Diadromous Fish Project including monitoring fish passage and collection of biological samples from anadromous fish runs. 6. Assists in the analysis and writing of reports and publications to support DMF research scientists and managers. 7. Operates, maintains, investigates, and recommends field equipment including safety equipment and various fisheries and environmental sampling gears. 8. Enters, audits, and edits DMF sea- and port-sampling data into state databases. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE 1. Experience sea sampling commercial catches of marine organisms using multiple gear types. 2. Experience working in the capacity of crew or operating small vessels in open water. 3. Knowledge of commercial fishing gears 4. Knowledge of fisheries biology, behavior, and management. 5. Ability to identify marine coastal fish and shellfish. 6. Ability to compile and tabulate data. 7. Ability to write clearly and concisely and to speak effectively. 8. Knowledge of computer software, including the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access). 9. Experience using electronic data collection equipment (tablet, boards, scales, laptop) to collect information in the field. 10. Ability to work at sea, including multiple day deployments. 11. Ability to lift 75 lbs. 12. Ability to work an irregular work day to accomplish biological sampling and other related field work. QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB * 1. Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications standards, and guidelines, governing agency operations and assigned unit activities. 2. Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms. *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * *MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelors or higher degree with a major in marine, fisheries, or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management, marine science or oceanography may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
