Position Overview:

The Supervisor, Vegetation Management provides leadership, direction, and oversight to the Company’s Vegetation Management efforts. This position directly supervises field employees responsible for all aspects of vegetation management, including regulatory compliance, customer and community interaction, developing the annual maintenance work plan, and supporting operations through emergent response and incident investigation. The Supervisor ensures all work is performed safely and in accordance with acceptable regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Location: District office within Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Fosters a safety-first mindset amongst employees while managing the productivity and individual performance of a group of seven or more vegetation management field employees of various skill sets.

  • Establishes and enforces clear expectations of employees regarding adherence to Company and Department procedures & regulations.

  • Expedites field work relating to vegetation management for timely completion and customer satisfaction.

  • Inspects work completed by employees to ensure adherence to State, Federal, Local regulations and Company and Department procedures and regulations and industry best practices.

  • Coordinates and formulates training of employees in the most up-to-date processes, technology, and safety procedures.

  • Travels within the service territory on a daily basis to perform safety observations and meet with employees and customers.

  • Supports Transmission & Distribution in storm restoration efforts.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental related field, such as Forestry, Arboriculture, or Environmental Sciences.

  • In lieu of a degree, a commensurate combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Five (5+) or more years of Utility Line Clearance industry or closely related experience.

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.

  • PA Dept of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicators License

  • International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist

  • International Society of Arboriculture Utility Specialist

  • Valid Driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field such as Forestry, Environmental Science, or other related disciplines

  • Electric utility background, including knowledge of government regulations related to transmission and distribution

  • Experience with ESRI software a plus; ArcGIS 9.x or higher

  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to respond to customer and community interactions.

  • Ability to identify local tree species (including growth and failure characteristics).

  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of MS Office; Excel is required.

  • Must be self-motivated, organized, and possess strong time management skills.

  • Ability to provide direction and respond to irregularities or unusual operating conditions observed by employees during the course of their normal daily work.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, plan, and allocate work to others.

  • Must be able to make clear, concise decisions under stressful conditions.

  • Must be available for extended hours and weekends in time of need.

Scope:

Primary focus is on day-to-day management of operational execution for areas managed. Trains and develops staff. Plans the workflow. Directs available resources to accomplish process improvement. Leads workflow changes and implementations for direct team.

Decision Impact:

Problems and issues are undefined and require detailed info gathering, analysis, and investigation to understand/resolve. Makes decisions that address workflow issues considering immediate impact on own function or work unit.

Work Location

Position works in the office or in the field. Reporting location and frequency may be subject to change based on job role and department needs.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to operate Company or personal vehicles on an extended daily basis. Ability to safely walk rights-of-way, traversing difficult terrain under all weather conditions. Available 24/7 to respond to emergency situations, both single event and longer duration events. Must be cognizant of hazards associated with driving and walking circuits through diverse terrain. Exposure to chemicals, electrical energy, and noise. When in field must access and evaluate work activities along rights-of-way, in potentially severe weather, over distances which may exceed several miles. When in field, exposed to line clearance workers operating heavy equipment, working overhead in and around energized high voltage equipment.

Storm Roles

All Non-Union Employees will serve in storm roles as appropriate to their role and skillset. Please be sure to discuss storm roles with the hiring manager for this position, as duties can vary across the Company. Examples of storm roles could include but aren't limited to duties such as: working with operations for service center support or with the communications, customer service or government affairs teams to respond to public and customer requests for information, etc.

Data Governance

Utilize data to make business decisions as appropriate for the position, support data stewardship activities and partner with IT on underlying data needs.
