Department Background:

As a service and maintenance department of Cornell AgriTech, the responsibility of the Buildings and Properties Unit (B & P) is to provide responsive maintenance, engineering and special services in support of our institution's vital research. The mission is to maintain and expand the campus and its facilities to the highest possible standards, while providing dependable and cost effective support services to those carrying out the research. B & P is a service organization dedicated to the success and satisfaction of Cornell AgriTech's faculty, academics, staff, students and campus visitors.


Position Summary:

As a service and maintenance department of Cornell AgriTech, the responsibility of the Buildings and Properties Unit (B & P) is to provide responsive maintenance, engineering and special services in support of our institution's vital research. The mission is to maintain and expand the campus and its facilities to the highest possible standards, while providing dependable and cost effective support services to those carrying out the research. B & P is a service organization dedicated to the success and satisfaction of Cornell AgriTech's faculty, academics, staff, students and campus visitors.


Under general supervision, working as a member of the Buildings and Properties team:

  • Functioning as a subject matter expert perform advanced to intermediate installation and repair of refrigeration equipment including: scroll type compressors, DX compressors, condensing units, evaporators, electric and steam defrost and piping repairs
  • Recover and store refrigerant, prepare documentation and records of refrigerants and necessary paperwork for compliance with University, State and Federal requirements
  • Apply cooling tower experience to meet operational needs
  • Diagnose problems and alarms from BAS system to recommend repair of HVAC equipment
  • Maintaining water cooled refrigeration systems during power outages
  • Act as a subject matter expert advising and providing guidance and support to other staff on Refrigeration and HVAC issues
  • Identify necessary parts and supplies needed to complete a task and work with shop lead to develop plan or procurement for Refrigeration and HVAC equipment
  • Collaborate with other trades people such as: engineers, mechanics and lab technicians to complete projects and repairs
  • Accurately record hours worked and materials used, update job statuses and pertinent information related to jobs in Cornell's computerized maintenance management system (MAXIMO)
  • Learn and follow safety and work environment regulations, policies and procedures (ARC flash prevention and protection, lead, asbestos, fall protection, confined space, and others as required)
  • Acquire and maintain licenses and/or special knowledge to maintain equipment as required
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and follow OSHA lockout/tag-out and other related safety procedures
  • Consistently follow guidance and best practices regarding working safely and use of required PPE
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed to resolve urgent campus refrigeration issues
  • Identify and recommend updates or improvements to refrigeration configurations and systems

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree with college coursework in Building Trades Construction, or trade associations training and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination (High School degree with 5-7 years experience)
  • Discipline expert, 5-7 years of experience working in an industrial facilities or manufacturing environment as a refrigeration technician on air cooled and water cooled equipment, from 1 ton to 75 tons.
  • Minimum 1-year trades HVAC-R training required. Must understand superheat and subcooling theories and obtained thru a formal training program.
  • Familiarity with electrical circuits to perform trouble shooting and diagnostics.
  • Braze line sets, make flare tubing connections as needed for new installation and repair.
  • Inspect refrigeration systems components performing routine and preventative maintenance
  • Maintain required knowledge of applicable safety and code compliance regulations and requirements
  • Possess excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Must have ability to use computer for communications, time entry, scheduling access, product research & online trainings
  • Well organized and ability to multitask
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed to resolve refrigeration issues
  • Ability to work independently to perform new installs, routine maintenance, and repairs
  • Operate and maintain trades equipment; strategically select most appropriate equipment to complete task
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment such as a respirator
  • Respond to work orders and requests to perform maintenance activities
  • Willingness and ability to stay current with industry developments and advancements
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver license and undergo successful driver background check and employment background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years' experience in Refrigeration/HVAC in a large-scale maintenance environment
  • Heat Pump experience with machines greater than 25 tons.
  • Familiarity with research laboratory wiring and electrical planning
  • Knowledge of Automated Logic Control (ALC) WebCTRL programming and control systems is a plus
  • Trained in use of forklift and elevated platform
  • Be able to participate in Cornell's Respirator use program
