Hobart and William Smith Colleges Access Services Technician I - Weekends in Geneva, New York

Perform selected library public service tasks in support of the overall library function. Technician must have strong written and verbal communication skills; patience and tact while participating in conversations with patrons; accurate computer data entry skills. Reliable and able to work independently under established guidelines without direct supervision evenings and/or weekends.

Essential Responsibilities:

· Monitor student assistant attendance, report problems to supervisor, and substitute when necessary.

· Open and/or close library facility.

· Answer directional and policy questions/concerns and refer to librarians when necessary.

· Answer telephone and transfer calls.

· Collect library materials left by readers and return them to sorting shelves.

· Assist the public with locating, retrieving, and checking out materials.

· Prepare library materials for shelving.

· Walk through the facility periodically to monitor activity.

· Record circulation desk activity statistics.

· Retrieve interlibrary loan books for readers.

· Charge/discharge books and other materials.

· Work with Campus Safety staff to maintain a safe environment.

· Shelve library materials.

· Contact supervisor to report problems, incidents, etc. as appropriate.

· Accept course reserve materials and/or lists from faculty.

· Search for library materials when patrons cannot locate them.

· Train student workers as needed.

· Empty book returns and sort contents.

· Ability to learn Library of Congress Classification.

This is a part-time, non-benefits-eligible administrative hourly paid position. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Pay rate is $16.00 per hour.

· Associate degree or equivalent

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Basic computer knowledge and skills

· The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
