Description of Work

Duties are to plan and schedule maintenance activities, assign crews and equipment to tasks, determine resource needs including materials, inspect activities of crews in progress and upon completion for compliance with standards and instructions, check and monitor work reports of subordinates, accounting for time, work completed, materials and equipment used. Assignments include responding to complaints; requests and routine inspection of problems and conditions in order to plan work; relaying information about policy, procedures and standards to all employees; assisting with interviewing and recommending hiring of employees; maintaining diaries and other required records; perform inspection of encroachments and driveway permits; perform routine safety audits and monitor inventory. Additional duties include coordinating and supervising force account construction, monitoring expenditures and work accomplished to assure compliance with budgets and work plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in planning and organizing work

  • Experience in filling out daily work sheets that document personnel, equipment and location worked.

  • Experience in calculating quantities of material needed for work crews to perform daily functions.

  • Experience in supervising a crew or crews.

Additional Expectations:

Ability to perform cost estimates for budget needs. Ability to operate motor vehicle with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to make field investigations on uneven terrain. Ability to supervise maintenance program implementation and monitor work operation to insure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Ability to accomplish force account construction projects. Ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
