Carmeuse Americas Safety Specialist, Regional in GARY, Indiana

The Health & Safety Specialist contributes in the implementation and execution the company’s Health & Safety Strategy placing a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and proactive measures. Support and drive a progressive approach to Health & Safety by sustaining or enhancing local practices, processes, tools, and training programs needed to ensure total effectiveness of the area’s health and safety management system. Actively engages and works with management within the region to leverage cultural changing elements of the Health & Safety program, while engaging the workforce to create and sustain a safety culture that continuously strives to achieve zero losses within the region. Additionally, and through the Area Health & Safety Manager, the Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting management to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct walk through audits and reviews of established health and safety procedures of sites within the region observing conditions and work practices. Make recommendations, champion change and recognize positive achievements/behaviors

  • Collaborate with Area Operations Manager, Site Operations Managers and Human Resources to establish safety performance metrics and goals

  • Continually engages salary and hourly employees to ensure the desired safety behaviors are being demonstrated at all levels of the organization

  • Provide regular support and guidance to facility personnel to maintain a safe work environment that is consistent with the company’s policies and state/federal regulations by ensuring the implementation of relevant processes; and that these programs are in compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Provide guidance on matters related to compliance with MSHA/OSHA regulations

  • Compile, analyze and interpret accident and loss statistical data in alignment with KPI and recommend action to be taken to ensure goals are being met by supporting both continuous improvement and a drive toward zero injuries Participate in safety reviews/audits of projects, new facilities, equipment or processes in conjunction with Engineering and Operations personnel

  • Assist front line supervision where required [SK1] with root cause analysis for accidents, incidents and near miss events; assist in development and implementation of corrective actions and ensure there is a protocol to follow up on corrective actions such that they are thoroughly implemented and sustained

  • Assist in generating regional/site specific information for weekly safety meetings, corporate and regional reporting to management teams regarding health and safety performance

  • Provides coaching and subject matter expertise to promote Continuous Improvement Culture and Cross Functional Teams to drive change by actively being a change agent for the regions’ health and safety program working within the Management Review process

  • Provide focus on the worker needs and requirements through proactive approach while promoting safe behaviors and a positive safety culture

  • Support contractor (and visitor and hauler) safety programs by regularly auditing their work practices including pre-construction meetings.

  • Assist with the completion of special information requests from regulatory agencies and representing the corporation in meetings with regulatory agencies

  • Workers Compensation case management

  • Provide guidance to local Joint Health & Safety Committee’s in their role of maintaining a cooperative spirit and supporting H&S compliance and initiatives.

  • Travel to all facilities to assist in Health & Safety efforts and initiatives

Requirements for the Position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Safety Management, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or related subject or equivalent experience and training

  • Professional certification such as Certified Mine Safety Specialist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Safety Professional, is preferred.

  • Minimum two years of progressive health and safety experience or operations experience, preferably in a mining, manufacturing or construction environment

  • MSHA experience is desired, with OSHA/DOT experience a strong plus

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities appropriately

  • Fluency in spoken and written English

  • Experience in dealing with unionized labor force

  • Must be able to support a continuous improvement environment as well as change management initiatives

  • Able to travel regularly to support sites throughout Regions. Typically 50% travel but will fluctuate based on objectives.

  • Excellent conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Salary range for this position is $87,000 - $97,000 as well as an annual bonus plan
