JOB DESCRIPTION:

Conducts innovative scientific investigation by developing theories and devising scientific methods and procedures to apply scientific principles, theories and research in projects related to the mission of UTMB. Assures competence as a fully trained scientist in a specific discipline or area of expertise.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

As part of a rapidly growing nephrology research program, you'll engage in cutting-edge research and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in the field of genetic and molecular epidemiology.

This scientist will conduct and/or direct routine and complex microbiome and virome-based research projects in a genetic and molecular epidemiology laboratory. Maintain records and large databases and conduct bench based mechanistic studies. Manage sequencing data needed for genetic and microbiome research projects. Communicating research findings to scientific community. Drafting proposals to procure research funding. Orient, train or teach, and give work direction to less experienced professionals. This position will be responsible for moving NIH funded, human microbiome/virome studies forward with emphasis on drug metabolism in human subjects. The scientist will work alongside an established multidisciplinary genomics, transcriptomics, virome and microbiome research team focused on pharmacogenomics while improving health disparities and clinical outcomes.

• Evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques and procedures while using judgment when necessary to adapt standard methods and techniques.

• Supervises work of lab staff, may lead or train Post Doctoral fellows, oversees execution of assigned tasks.

• Establishes research objectives and methodology, designs procedures, conducts research projects, analyzes & interprets results.

• Contributes to scientific analysis and interpretation of projects.

• Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected, compiles and tabulates data, provides analysis of results.

• Confers with lab staff regarding results obtained and receives suggestions for modification to procedures and interpretation of final data.

• Presents research and journal articles in weekly scheduled meetings.

• Independently performs literature searches as outlined by the Principal Investigator.

• Conduct and/or direct routine and complex microbiome/virome-based research projects in a genetic and molecular epidemiology laboratory.

• Evaluates, suggests alternative methods, modifies, or develops new procedures and techniques to aid in the investigation of microbiome/virome-based assays and biomarkers

• Implementation of new anaerobic procedures and techniques for an anaerobic microbiology lab, including work with model organisms, drug metabolism assays, and preparing samples for 2nd and 3rd generation sequencing assays.

• Analyzes research data generated from the experiments. Plan new avenues of investigation and conduct investigations into research projects

• Scientist will be expected to help maintain the molecular epidemiology lab and the anaerobic microbiology lab

• May provide guidance to junior research staff.

• Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph. D, M.D, D.O., or D.V.M in related field and one year of related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Sufficient professional experience to assure competence as a fully trained scientist in a specific discipline or area of expertise.

• MD or PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, or a related field.

• Experience with bioinformatical analysis of sequencing data (including single-cell and bulk genomic and epigenomic data).

• Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and innovative scientific strategies is essential, as is working with human specimens, such as blood, saliva, urine, feces, etc.. Skill in utilizing anaerobic chambers (Coy, Bactron, Anoxomat), PCR protocols (rt-qPCR) and enzymatic assays preferred.

SALARY:

Commensurate with experience.
