Minimum Qualifications :

  • Masters of Divinity Degree (or its equivalent of graduate theological education of 72 semester hours) from an accredited Seminary or School of Theology, as well as Ecclesiastical Endorsement.

  • A minimum of four (4) completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education and be certified (or eligible to be certified) as a Board Certified Chaplain or Associate Certified Chaplain through the Board of Chaplaincy Certification or obtain certification within 3 years of hire.

  • A minimum of five (5) years healthcare chaplain experience and at least one year administrative experience.

  • Must possess a positive and professional attitude, critical judgment skills, strong organizational skills, be self-motivated and self-monitoring, and be able to work independently and interdependently (as a team).

Job Summary:

To manage the UTMB Pastoral Care Department to include management of resources (financial and personnel), and the provision of leadership and education in support of departmental and institutional goals and objectives, assuring the provision of spiritual care and support to patients and families.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage clinical responsibility for spiritual care visitation.

  • Assures the provision of individual and group in-service education on topics related to the interface of health and spiritual well-being.

  • Serves as a mentor and colleague to others (lay and clergy) involved in UTMB ministry.

  • Initiates and leads program development which may include policy development, grant writing, work with local churches, committee assignments.

  • Leads and participates in the development and implementation of training programs for clergy and lay chaplains as appropriate to mission.

  • Develops liaison relationships with area pastoral care programs, especially those which offer Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and training programs for clergy and lay ministers.

  • Provides direct management and administrative leadership and supervision to departmental personnel.

  • Oversees all aspects of human resource management including: recruitment, discipline, and completion of annual employee performance appraisals.

  • Provides coverage in agreed upon clinical care areas.

  • Establishes and administers departmental policies, procedures, and related forms in accordance with state, federal and organizational guidelines by reviewing, revising and communicating them to ensure compliance.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of institutional programs and/or initiatives, as requested.

  • Leads efforts in the development of short and long term strategic plans for the department.

  • Performs related duties as assigned, including covering a clinical assignment in addition to administrative responsibilities.
