What we want

The Engineering Watch Officer stands engineering watch or performs maintenance as directed by the chief engineer/first engineer relevant to their assigned position. Participates in the operational, maintenance and repair training of engineering cadets.

What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

The pay scale is as follows:

Chief Engineer & 1st Assistant Engineer Licenses:

$60/hour based on 8 hour day, est. $480/day

2nd & 3rd Assistant Engineer Licenses :

$48.00/hour based on 8 hour day, est. $384/day

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of total experience as an engineering officer on steam or diesel or gas turbine vessels.

  • One year of underway watch standing experience as third assistant engineer (OICEW) on steam powered vessels of unlimited horsepower

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Third Assistant Engineer license for steam vessels of unlimited horsepower or greater, TWIC, valid passport, and valid United States driver’s license, requisite STCW certifications, STCW medical card and proof of US eligibility for employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • USCG endorsement as third assistant engineer of motor vessels of unlimited horsepower, gas turbine vessels – unlimited horsepower. EPA certification as universal refrigeration technician.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of steam power plants including propulsion boilers, turbines, auxiliary turbines, auxiliary equipment and systems.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of the equipment and systems of steam power vessels.

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of integrated diesel electric power systems.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Operations - Assists the Chief Engineer, 1st Assistant, 2nd Assistant and 3rd Assistant Engineers crew with all operation and maintenance duties as directed. Monitors operational performance of all equipment and systems. . When needed, utilizes a University vehicle to obtain parts or supplies. Performs “day work” as directed.

  • Instructor/Mentor/Other - Participates in the education and instruction of engineer cadets by direction to the extent that it does not interfere with their operational duties. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift or move moderately heavy objects and exert moderate force.

  • Ability to repeatedly ascend / descend steeply inclined stairs and vertical ladders – day and night and in inclement conditions.

  • Ability to crawl above, below, and around obstructions and interferences in order to access equipment and systems for operation and maintenance.

  • Ability to read and understand information displayed on various types of pressure gauges, flow meters, and other engineering equipment.

Other Requirements and Factors

  • Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1). Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training sea terms aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston.

  • This position is security sensitive.
