Job Description:
Technical Functions:
-Plan and execute Illumina MiSeq sequencing runs.
-Maintain and troubleshoot Illumina MiSeq instruments.
-Evaluate MiSeq, iSeq and ONT instruments data and prepare written reports for research projects.
-Construct and perform quality assessment of samples, and sequence libraries for the ONT, PacBio and Illumina platforms.
-Test, troubleshoot and implement new protocols for ultra-low input (Illumina) library construction protocol, using novel procedures as they become available in the literature or from vendors.
-Communicate with supervisor and other core personnel about experimental results in a timely and professional manner. Work with supervisor to define deliverables and timelines for project completion.
-Contribute to the preparation, updating and organization of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
General Lab Operation and Maintenance Functions:
-Contribute to the development and maintenance of lab tracking system (LIMS) in the NGS workflows.
-Attend all relevant coordination and organizational meetings as requested by supervisor.
-Participate in general lab maintenance, help in the maintenance of a complete inventory of reagents, consumables and equipment used for NGS sequencing.
-Assist lab manager in keeping track of inventories and placing orders of reagents, consumables for ONT, PacBio and Illumina sequencing as needed.
-Assist the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) manager for the NextGen lab as needed, for the purpose of complying with all EHS institutional requirements.
Educational Functions:
-Keep abreast of new developments in the NGS field through the literature and scientific meetings.
-Help in the training of other personnel in the NGS Core group. Participate in cross-training activities in the ICBR as necessary and/or requested by lab director.
Expected Salary:
$44,000 - $46,000, commensurate with education and experience
Minimum Requirements:
BA/BS in related scientific field required with hands-on experience in basic laboratory and scientific methods. Optionally, 4 years of experience in science related field with at least 3 years in core specific applications.
Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred applicant will have a familiarity with the basic techniques and instrumentation used in the molecular biology laboratory, including specific NGS procedures that include (but are not limited to):
• Genomic DNA purification, quantification and manipulation, PCR, NGS DNA library construction and quality assessment/evaluation.
• Use of robotics for high throughput processing of moeluclar biology samples.
• Hands-on experience with Illumina, PacBio and/or ONT NGS instrumentation and technology.
• Basic laboratory citizenship including organization of equipment and supply inventory,
• Instrument run coordination and maintenance.
• Preparation of common buffers and solutions.
• Computer literacy in Windows/UNIX systems, Microsoft office package.
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), iLAB and laboratory information management system (LIMS).
