Description:

Nurse Manager Emergency Department

Demonstrates the ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the Patient's needs.

  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.

  • Makes initial assessment, and determines appropriate nursing needs of assigned patients,

as evidenced by appropriate documentation.

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment on all assigned patients, including a review of systems, as evidenced by appropriate documentation.

  • Functions in first-line management/clinical leadership role in coordinating patient care activities on the nursing unit.

  • Provides for direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient and significant others.

  • Is knowledgeable of current nursing practices and ensures compliance to the hospital s policies and procedures.

  • Serves as a coordinator of the multi-disciplinary approach to patient s care to include care planning, patient teaching, and discharge planning.

  • Assists with patient/family education as needed.

  • Actively supports the PI activities of the department and division.

  • Variance reports are completed within the defined time frame.

  • Ensures appropriate staffing and coverage for unanticipated needs, within the guidelines of the department.

  • Assists in long-, short-term staff scheduling.

  • Participates in the interviewing process of prospective staff and provides input to the Director.

  • Ensures that staff utilize the nursing process in meeting patient care standards.

  • Utilizes effective delegation skills in assigning duties to other staff and Senior Nurses

  • Provides patient with explanations of condition as necessary and written information when possible.

  • Recognizes and utilizes opportunities for health teaching of patients and relatives.

  • Documents patient teaching and patient verbalization of understanding.

  • Participates in the coordination of a planned orientation program for the nursing unit.

*Serves as a liaison between preceptor and orientee.

  • Shares benefits of seminars attended with fellow workers, as indicated by divisional Unit Director.

  • Supervises the planning, implementation, and evaluation of unit-based competency testing.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the provision of nursing care.

  • Insures appropriate patient preparation as well as timely completion of chart, prior to surgery, special procedure, transfer or discharge.

  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physician and in accordance with Policies and Procedures.

  • Establishes nursing care priorities. Competently cares for patient with highest acuity on unit (unit specific).

  • Provides, or supervises, patient s care and treatment.

  • Performs other job-related duties within job scope as requested by Unit Director.

  • Assists fellow staff members in completing assignments in time of crisis.

  • Assumes primary nurse, team leader, or patient care responsibilities as necessary

  • Promotes teamwork and collegial relationships with, and among staff.

  • Communicates clearly and effectively with physicians and other staff health care providers.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills.

  • Intervenes appropriately and keeps Unit Director informed of departmental issues.

  • Follows appropriate lines of communication and appropriately documents actions taken, i.e: patient chart, anecdotal note, variance report.

  • Responds to physician and staff issues in a timely manner.

  • Schedules, conducts, and/or documents monthly staff meetings, as directed by the Unit Director.

  • Demonstrates the essence of team by acting in a positive, productive manner with co-workers and other departments personnel.

  • Serves as role model to other staff members.

  • Provides input to, and completes, employee evaluations as requested by the Unit Director.

  • Performance Appraisals are delivered on time

  • Provides positive and negative feedback to employees related to performance and documents

  • Provides first-line counseling of employees as needed/directed.

  • Maintains, and works with, staff throughout the year in achieving performance improvement goals.

  • Attends educational programs related to area of practice.

  • Maintains BCLS certification as well as advanced competencies related to area of practices.(ACLS, PALS, NALS)

  • Leads by example in the attainment of specialty certifications

  • Attends, and actively participates on, assigned committees.

  • Current membership in the specialty/professional organization.

  • Inspect unit for compliance with unit/departmental policies, procedures, regulations, and standards. Takes measures to correct and report when violations occur.

  • Reads, and complies with, established Hospital Policies and Procedures and department memos.

  • Maintains, with compliance to, all requirements elated to JCAHO, AHCA, HIPAA and other regulatory agencies.

  • Serves as a coach/mentor in recommending personnel actions such as promotions, clinical ladder advancement and transfers.

  • Ensures Associate mandatory requirements are completed on time.

  • Monitor workflow and productivity during shift on unit.

  • Coordinate and adjust work schedules to meet the needs of the unit. Work with Administrative Director and Staffing Office on staffing issues as they arise to assure that unit needs are met. Approves incremental overtime and permits staff to leave early to meet the needs of the unit and maintains budgetary compliance.

*Completes Enrichment, Corporate Compliance and other trainings as assigned

Education & Qualifications

*Graduate from an accredited school of nursing is required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or related field, preferred.

  • Specialty certification desirable.

  • Previous experience as regular Charge Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse level on a nursing unit required.

  • Strong leadership traits, as well as experience with staffing, scheduling, and strong communication skills necessary.

Licensure:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Florida.

*Minimum of BLS Certification.
