L.L. Bean is searching for a Senior Art Director to join our Creative team in our new headquarters building in Freeport, Maine.

In this important role, you will be instrumental in the detailed planning and art direction of L.L.Bean photo shoots—both in-studio and on location. If you are a team player, creative, strategic, and have a proven track record of enhancing apparel brands through photography, we’d love to talk to you!

This role requires a hybrid approach to the workplace – with days in the office in Freeport required. Travel is also necessary.

Position Purpose: Work closely with Lead Art Director and Art Director Manager in executing compelling consumer-facing photography and videos. Collaborates with Merchandising, Design and Copy partners to develop deliverables that will engage the customer, elevate the brand, and support customer and product strategies. Art directs assigned projects. Assist in planning, directing, and editing shoots. Has a solid knowledge of trending and effective directors, photographers, videographers and content creators, a good understanding of composition and lighting, seasonal fashion trends, and has experience giving creative direction for hair & make-up. Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Lead Art Director to develop strategies for assigned projects to support business plans.

  • Attends assigned pre-shoot planning meetings collaborating with Merchants and Content partners.

  • Collaborate with Producers to source appropriate talent for assigned shoot crews and cast. Determines all locations and set needs.

  • Functions as “Director” on set of assigned projects.

  • Executes assigned projects on schedule and within assigned expenses.

  • Review footage selection with Creative Leadership.

  • Collaborate with Producer on selecting freelance and vendors for specialized work as needed. 

  • Partner with Photo Operations to ensure necessary production requirements are met.

  • Conduct review of assigned projects with Senior Leadership.

  • Applies a solid aesthetic "eye" to convey brand, strategy, and editorial messages in unique and innovative ways.

  • Support other Art Directors as needed with the editing, organizing, and final selection of assigned projects.

  • Assumes additional responsibilities as requested.

  • Potential travel to support shoots.

  • Solid industry awareness of style trends current trends in retail and outdoor industry

  • Demonstrated passion photography and video content, both editorial and fashion/outdoor industry oriented with strong aesthetic eye

  • Able to work independently and proactively

  • Able to think strategically

  • Proven track record of establishing a brand's visual aesthetics

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Highly organized

  • Prioritizes collaborative environments and strong partnerships

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to incorporate customer research and business strategy into creative solutions

  • Ability to challenge the standard operating procedure, appetite for change

  • Solid skills in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
