The State Highway Administration (SHA) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill an executive service position as an Assistant District Engineer – Maintenance (Administrator VII). This position is open to SHA employees who meet the preferred qualifications listed below.

Nature of Work: The Assistant District Engineer (ADE) of Maintenance will be responsible for managing, directing, and coordinating the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Program for metropolitan District 7, which is composed of Howard, Frederick, and Carroll Counties, 2,404 lane miles, and 394 bridges with an annual budget of nearly 17.8 million dollars. This role coordinates and directs emergency operations resulting from storms, floods, snow, major accidents, and incidents. Duties include but are not limited to providing supervision leadership and engineering direction to the Resident Maintenance Engineers (RME), Office Engineers, and associated staff; serves as the District Designated Procurement Officer; directly and indirectly supervises 190 employees; manages 405 pieces of equipment and vehicles; and manages rest areas within the district; and responsible for approximately 50 million dollars worth of facilities.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Three (3) years of the required experience must have involved managing maintenance or construction programs and/or projects.

Notes:

  1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

    1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

    2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

    3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher-ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
