Certified Surgical Assistant PRN Southampton Memorial Hospital

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Utilizes advanced knowledge and experience to assess the health needs of patients, collaborates with health team members to coordinate patient care, anticipates the needs of the surgeon and utilizes training as a Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant to improve overall quality of care for the patients.

Employment Qualifications

  • High School Graduate; Graduate from an accredited school of Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant or military equivalent.

  • Current Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant.

  • Current BCLS certification.

  • Previous experience in the Perioperative setting with a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist or as approved by the Administrative Director. Expertise in the specialty area of interest preferred.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care in surgical specialties of General, Gynecologic, Orthopaedic, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgical, Plastic, Oral, Vascular, Thoracic, Urological, and Cardiac utilizing training as a Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant.

  • Demonstrates the ability, knowledge, and skills to work with diverse populations, including children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics and integrates individual patient/surgeon preferences into the plan of care.

  • Helps to positions patients, provides protection of pressure points, keeps body parts in proper alignment and modifies positioning to reduce potential injury. Assists in prepping and draping patients for the surgical procedure.

  • Demonstrates competency in visualization (retraction of tissue) to expose anatomy without causing undue pressure on organs and tissue of the operative site during the operative procedure.

  • Demonstrates competency in the proper techniques to assist the surgeon in providing hemostasis (clamping/tying and/or electrosurgery) to control blood loss during the surgical procedure.

  • Demonstrates competency in the appropriate techniques to assist with dissection and closure of body planes (suturing).

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.

  • Follows medical / surgical asepsis during procedures and follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.

  • Works with other team members in the selection and preparation of routine supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures. Ensures that additional case specific supplies, instrumentation, and equipment are readily available in the room.

  • Participates and encourages teammates in effectively completing room turnover procedures to include set-up and clean-up protocols, including but not limited to putting away supplies and equipment.

  • The Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant demonstrates expertise in patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and the surgeon performing the procedure.

  • Anticipates and performs tasks that help promote and maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients, staff, surgeons, and self.

  • Acts and communicates in a professional and respectful manner with patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel to enhance a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect and trust among members of the patient care team.

  • Utilizes professional practice standards, (AORN, AST, etc.) in the delivery of care, and for self-assessment. Holds others accountable to the same standards.

  • Takes the initiative to identify problems, offer appropriate solutions, and follow up with necessary interventions in a timely manner under the direction of the RN or Supervisor.

  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified First Assistant scope of practice.

  • Provides support for new initiatives and assists with positive change management by adapting to the demands of the situation.

  • Supports surgical service’s efforts to exceed patient satisfaction rates for the individual facility, consistently using scripted language that promotes excellent patient satisfaction responses.

  • Supports efforts to exceed targets for employee engagement, recruitment, and retention for the individual facility. Speaks positively about the department, the organization, and the initiatives underway.

  • Adheres to Southampton Medical Center rules, regulations, and policies.

Other Job Functions

  • Access to storage areas with minimal risk medications while performing job duties as assigned.

  • Transportation of medications from pharmacy to appropriate medication storage area.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. Assists and supports other departments as needed.

  • Assists with transport of patients to and from surgery while protecting patients’ sensitivities and right to privacy.

  • Provides support for new initiatives and assists with positive change management by adapting to the demands of the situation.
