POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision the Control Technician installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts indicating, recording, telemetering, and controlling instruments used to measure and control variables, such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition. Employees in this job class use instruments, such as potentiometers, resistance bridges, manometers, and pressure gauges to inspect instruments periodically and makes minor calibration adjustments to ensure functioning within specified standards. This job class requires the ability to adjust and repair final control mechanisms, such as automatically controlled valves or positioners, and calibrate instruments according to established standards.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
*Follows procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
*Provides technical support to HVAC Mechanics, Boiler Tenders, Stationary Engineers, and other departments.
*Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains various mechanical, HVAC and refrigerated equipment, utilizing skills in plumbing, mechanical, electrical, electronic, HVAC and refrigeration.
*Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit. Installs humidifiers into system and connects water and drainpipes. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines.
*Completes testing to ensure conformance with specifications.
*Mounts compressor and condenser units, uses hand and metalworking tools and welding equipment.
*Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts. Installs evaporator units in chassis or in air-duct systems. Installs insulation on ductwork and air-duct systems.
*Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand- threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming completed circuit for refrigerant. Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and- water solution.
*Assesses drain problems and performs needed repairs.
*Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place.
*May install, repair, and service air conditioners and chillers, ranging from 15 to 600 tons cooling capacity.
*Monitors and inspects heating and cooling systems to ensure continued proper operation. *Performs preventative maintenance on heating and cooling systems. Maintains and records maintenance and operation logs.
*Investigate problems and performs repairs on various mechanical and electrical equipment in heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigerated systems.
*Replaces defective breaker, controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
*Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and reset controls and control panels.
*Replaces defective controls, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
*Replaces defective HVAC electrical and electronic controls to include communication cables.
*Monitors energy management control system and building automation systems; responds promptly to alarm conditions and troubleshoots system malfunction in the field.
*Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
*Checks distribution systems for proper velocity, volume, temperature, pressure, etc. Determines amount of airflow required to keep carbon dioxide at a safe level and ensures it is maintained.
*Maintain, repairs, and installs various dining facility equipment.
*Follows blueprints or engineering specifications; may prepare work sketches and assist in the design and specifications of planned work.
*Locates, picks up, and delivers parts required for department needs.
*Assists in monitoring and training of Maintenance Trades Helpers, General Maintenance Workers, and HVAC Mechanics by providing instruction and reviewing completed projects.
*Responds to emergency calls after normal work hours.
*Frequent travel between facilities is required.
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Eight to fifteen years of field experience servicing and repairing HVAC/R equipment and controls.
· Advanced knowledge of and understanding of energy management control systems and building automation systems.
· Ability to diagnose and resolve advanced network operation problems.
· Knowledge of computer systems operation and network administration.
· Able to use industry hand and machine tools (i.e., vacuum pumps)
· Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and written instructions
· Advanced electrical and electronic trouble shooting skills.

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

• Lifting and moving tools, equipment, and/or materials up to 35 pounds

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed at a customer’s location in office, shop, warehouse, or outdoor environment. Equipment is located in crawl spaces, rooftops, and outside facility. Employees may be exposed to toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.
