BluePearl Pet Hospital is hiring a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia or Surgery to join our Ft Myers, FL, Surgery Team!

As an Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) you will apply advanced, specialized knowledge in the delivery of remarkable nursing care for pets.  The VTS will support our Clinicians in providing specialty medical services, possess advanced skills, model growing standards of skill, and facilitate the development of Technician productivity.

As an Veterinary Technician Specialist, you will:

  • Provide nursing care to stable patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.

  • Coordinate and guide daily service flow including any interactions of additional staff rotating through the department, which may include doctors (interns/residents).

  • Assists with facilitating staff training for all technicians and assistants within department.

  • Ability to take patient through entire procedure from start to finish (pre-op, peri-op, post-op, and recovery with assistance from ICU personnel)

  • Assist in patient procedures using knowledge of anesthesia and analgesia related protocols and procedures, including formulating anesthetic plans tailored to individual patient needs.

  • Monitor anesthesia for all cases, trouble shoot anesthetic complications, and make appropriate interventions.

  • Ability to respond to any and all anesthetic emergencies and problems (arrhythmias, blood pressure issues, cardiopulmonary arrest, pulse oximetry and capnography abnormalities).

  • Advanced knowledge and performance of scrub assistance on all surgical procedures.

  • Perform local or regional anesthetic blocks of any area or region.

  • Perform casting techniques as directed by veterinarian, where permitted by state law.

  • Mastery knowledge of common surgical procedures and related disease processes.

  • Ability to setup, care for, maintain and monitor a patient on a critical care mechanical ventilator without changing settings.

  • Comfortablewith medical math, drug calculations, and handling of controlled substances.

  • Placeperipheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein.

  • Performphysical exam; accurately counts heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time,mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.

  • Understand normal vital parameters and alerts doctor when abnormal.

  • Set up, disconnect, and administer intravenous and subcutaneous fluids.

  • Monitor patient response to fluid therapy including signs of overload.

  • Manage appointments, obtain histories, medical record keeping, invoicing, patient discharges, etc.

  • Mastery of care, use, and application of all instrumentation, including ability to appropriately maintain and repair instruments when appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • You must be a Credentialed Veterinary Technician (from a AVMA accredited program) and possess a VTS certification with either the ACVAA or AVST academies. If you are not VTS credentialed, then you are eligible, or will be eligible, to sit for the examination receive your VTS.

  • Demonstrated capacity to train lower-level staff at requisite knowledge and skill levels required.

  • Strong interpersonal skills: able to communicate effectively with clients, doctors, management, hospital personnel, tenant specialists, consulting professionals and clients

  • Strong organizational/time management skills: able to set, prioritize and attain goals with attention to detail

  • Strong professional development skills: able to complete continue education in the field of veterinary medicine concurrently with job description

  • Strong sense of integrity: able to maintain highest ethical standards, personal responsibility and accountability and confidentiality of clients, doctors, and all staff

  • Strong analytical thinking skills: ability to use objective data to solve problems/create solutions.

  • Follows and upholds the veterinary technology profession’s ethical codes.
