Seeking a meticulous and proactive Environmental Laboratory Technician to conduct comprehensive laboratory and field analyses. The role involves a variety of tasks including the collection, preparation, transportation, and testing of samples to ensure compliance with environmental standards for water, soil, and air.

About the Department of Natural Resources

The Natural Resources laboratory, boasting NELAP/TNI certification from the State of Florida, carries out rigorous testing for 44 potable and 53 non-potable analytes. To uphold our certification, the laboratory engages in proficiency testing biannually and undergoes a comprehensive audit biennially. Our field staff diligently monitors over 145 surface water sites each month, conducting a variety of sampling procedures. Equipped with specialized instruments for the analysis of metals, IC/TOC, and biological samples, the lab is at the forefront of environmental testing. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Technical position that supports monitoring programs throughout the County's geographic area by collecting manual and electronic water quality and other environmental samples, while adhering to Florida Department of Environmental Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Water quality and/or environmental sample collection from a wide variety of sources including, but not limited to, utility and/or solid waste plants, freshwater and marine ecosystems, groundwater wells, soils, and sediments.

  • Perform both routine and highly detailed sampling procedures to satisfy permitting and regulatory requirements while following safety protocols.

  • Maintain records and database information such as sampling schedule, sampling locations, and project status in a timely fashion.

  • Critically observe and comprehensively document field conditions that could affect sample quality or results.

  • Discuss and analyze sampling locations, field observations, and results. Prepare reports and keep detailed records.

  • Communicate, record, and download data using an assortment of electronic, digital, and analog-type devices, and software.

  • Deploy, maintain, repair, calibrate, and operate data collection equipment and instrumentation. For example, pumps, water quality sampling, monitoring meters, and automatic sampling equipment that require programming ability and knowledge of power sources.

  • Regularly inspect and operate motor vehicles and powerboats, occasionally in remote areas. Navigate to monitoring sites using GPS or other technology.

Education, Experience, Licensing

  • Requires any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and one year of experience that involves science, research, and/or mathematics as well as environmental monitoring.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required.

Supplemental Information

  • Proficient in analyzing and interpreting laboratory test outcomes.

  • Well-versed in office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and related applications.

  • Skilled in maneuvering 4-wheel drive vehicles across rugged terrain.

  • Competent in handling, launching, and piloting boats, with the ability to manage associated trailering tasks.

  • Capable of enduring and performing tasks in challenging environmental conditions over prolonged durations.

  • Adherence to established standard operating procedures is essential.

Work Schedule: The standard workweek is Monday to Friday, with daily hours from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Additionally, there is a monthly requirement to work four hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Compensation for weekend work is provided with a corresponding day off during the preceding week, typically Friday.
