U.S. Army Military District of Washington Animal Health Technician (Equine) in Fort Myer, Virginia

Summary About the Position: Serve as an Animal Health Technician (Equine) at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBM-HH) with duty at the Caisson Detachment of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), responsible for performing and assisting with complicated technical procedures involving equine diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general care, or any combination of veterinary support work in support of the Veterinary Services equine mission. Responsibilities Perform and record monthly stable inspections. Analyze and evaluate environmental sanitation programs for the herd; set conditions, when necessary, to isolate, quarantine, vaccinate, and establish preventive medicine procedures in the facility. Administer daily medication, estimate weights of working equines, update body condition scores. Assist veterinarian with examination, emergencies, and routine procedures (fluid therapy, drug dose calculation, anesthetic and sedation adjustment by heart/respiratory rate, intravenous catheter insertion). Coordinate with and aid Animal Care Specialists with monthly and quarterly veterinary specific training. Assist in feed plan development, feed and supplement analysis, and ensure daily grooming and care of equines are conducted to acceptable industry standard. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes provide medical care to large animals such as horses; assist veterinarian with medical examinations such as pre-purchase examinations; and assist with dispensing medication to large animals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Zoology, Biology, Chemistry, or Agricultural subjects. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Selective Placement Factor: This position requires a current, valid license as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Animal Husbandry Communications Safety and Quality Care Teaches Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08). Position has been designated as Key: This position shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the agency to function effectively. Because of the essential nature of this position, shall require that it not be filled by members of the National Guard, Ready Reservists or military retirees with recall obligations to preclude such position from being vacated during a mobilization. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized for highly qualified candidates. Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 3 years by a current permanent Army employee. Time limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted.
