Indian Health Service Health Technician (Optometry) in Fort Duchesne, Utah

Summary This position is located in the Optometry Clinic at the Uintah-Ouray Service Unit within the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service (IHS). This position is located in Fort Duchesne, Utah. Responsibilities Performs screenings to include: visual acuity, confrontation fields, extra-ocular muscle movements, pupillary reaction, interpupillary distance measurements, and manual and automated lens neutralization. The employee reviews the chart for pertinent health information, and obtains ocular information from outside agencies that have provided services. Prepares the patient, swabbing the area clean before and after a patient encounter, removing eye shields, prosthetics, pressure patches, contact lenses, preparing the room and instruments for the procedure, assists with positioning the patient's head or holding the eyelids apart. Provides orientation and training for other employees and interns and maintains supply of patient education materials. Meets and greets patients, directs patient flow, schedules appointments, answers telephone, takes messages, transfers telephone calls, responds to patient inquiries, assists patients with referrals, assists with medication requests, pre-op and post-op information, and questions regarding clinic policies and procedures. Maintains clinic supplies and pharmaceutical orders using inventory checklists. Cleans equipment after patient use in compliance with infection control policies and procedures. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience in an optometry or ophthalmology office independently preparing patients for examination by performing entrance tests including autorefraction and lensometry; gathering ocular and medical history; performing other tests as needed such as Humphrey visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and retinal photography to assist with glaucoma management or other diseases; administering proper use of pharmacological agents, diagnosis, prognosis, eye wear use and adaption and contact lens education. *Certificates will be issued every 10 days until the position is filled and the location will be removed from the job announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive. This position has no promotion potential.
