Description of Work Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Position Summary

The Financial and Systems Analyst provides expert guidance in developing and implementing financial strategies, including high-level accounting, planning, budgeting, compliance, and expense reporting. This role oversees indirect cost tracking, costing, and billing for internal and external recharge centers, as well as endowment and gift fund expenditures and budget allocations.

As the primary contact for center/unit faculty, TMI executive operational accounts, and TMI Director accounts, this position ensures expenditures align with TMI’s strategic initiatives. Managing a diverse range of accounts across multiple fund groups, the Analyst enforces financial management practices and compliance with university and state policies, as well as donor specifications for gift funds. The role also produces financial management reports for various stakeholders and collaborates closely with the Center/Unit Institute Director, Associate Directors, and the Associate Director of Operations and Strategy, Education, Research, and Business Development. There is also required interaction and partnership, when applicable with the Department of Clinical Sciences, the Department Business Officer and Department Finance Manager.

This position is a full-time appointment, based on the CSU Fort Collins campus. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; The department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, financial management, computer science, accounting or a related field.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience and working knowledge of accounting and financial information systems.

  • Advanced analytical skills, with experience collecting, organizing, and disseminating abundant information accurately.

  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated success working as part of a team in a complex academic or business office environment, including financial and administrative work in a leadership capacity involving the simultaneous execution of multiple programs and initiatives.

  • Demonstration of strong, effective oral and written communication skills.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; The department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience and working knowledge of accounting and information systems including Kuali Financial System, KR/PD Proposal Submission System, Oracle, Excel, MS Word and Crystal Reports.

  • Experience creating and managing budgets and variance analysis.

  • Ability to present findings via verbal conversations and financial reporting.

  • Experience with statistics and dataset analytics (using SPSS , SAS , Excel)

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with an innovative approach to business planning

Duty/Responsibility

  • Leads to the preparation of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with the TMI’s strategic financial goals. Develop a detailed “all funds” budget by individual accounts, report groups, and sub-accounts, providing comprehensive financial oversight.

  • Consults with the department during the budgeting process to ensure alignment with the department goals and objectives.

  • Maintain records of commitments to the TMI and commitments by the TMI , ensuring accurate tracking and reporting.

  • Conduct monthly variance analysis and financial forecasts to the fiscal year-end, identifying potential risks and opportunities.

  • Partnering with the department, to assist with reviewing and approving financial transactions to ensure accuracy and propriety, overseeing account reconciliation processes, and responding to audit inquiries and adjusting practices as required.

  • Identify trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement in financial performance.

  • Develop and maintain financial models to support various financial planning and analysis activities.

  • In collaboration with the Department, work with the Associate Director of Operations and Strategy and members of the institute, to develop business and financial plans to ensure the financial integrity of programs and identify opportunities to utilize available funds for optimal outcomes.

  • Onsite super user for numerous information technology systems at CSU . Such as Kuali Financial Systems, Kuali Research, WebFocus, Symphony, My Research and Administration & Management.

  • Onsite super user for local information technology systems in the TMI . Such as Crystal Reports, Monday.com, Calpendo, MS Excel, MS Access.

  • Create, monitor, and update record-keeping systems to compile data and prepare reports.

  • Problem solving and overcoming obstacles or challenges to technology systems.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position oversees the accounting for the TMI funds which includes appropriated funds, intramural and extramural research grants, indirect cost returns, faculty startups, internal recharge centers, external service centers, scholarship and gift funds and other fund sources.

  • As the Fiscal Officer, review and approve financial transactions for authenticity and allowability, monitor balances; assure accurate time and effort allocations; complete account reconciliations to the financial system of record; and identify/correct errors and justify expense redistribution while implementing effective means to avoid future recurrences.

  • Assist with cost analysis and billing rate calculations for internal and external service centers; understand and address the impact of indirect costs rates, cost increases and/or decreased revenue.

  • Prepare invoices for both the internal and external clients and manage accounts receivable and deposit funds received from these clients

  • Serve as facility resource to TMI constituents for interpretation of the University’s purchasing policies and procedures.

  • Assist TMI constituents with any problems associated with transactions as needed.
