Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

A Biologist (Little Fire Ant Control) position is available with Colorado State University ( CSU ) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). The majority of work will be conducted on US military bases within the Joint Region Marianas. This position is a 40-hour week appointment and will be physically located in the US Territory of Guam.

The Biologist (Little Fire Ant Control) will be the Task Lead for ant population delineations, site preparation and chemical control of invasive little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) on military lands. Invasive species control of little fire ants includes vegetation management, field data collection, treatment planning and pesticide application. The Biologist will be responsible for compiling, analyzing, mapping using ArcGIS and reporting associated data. The daily activities of at least two (2) Biological Technicians will be guided by the Biologist to achieve task goals. There will likely be opportunities to assist with other ecological tasks, including surveys for endangered species. The Biologist is expected to ensure a safe workplace, the proper use of pesticides and installation biosecurity protocols for all team members as they conduct their assigned tasks.

Military affiliation is not a requirement for this position.

This position is duty stationed on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Guam averages 86 degrees (F) year-round with a multitude of activities, including diving and snorkeling at Tumon Bay Marine Park, sky diving, beautiful hiking trails; as well as modern shopping malls and movie theaters. Field and office work will occur primarily on military lands on Guam administered by Naval Facilities Engineering Command Marianas.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in biology, zoology, ecology, wildlife sciences, botany, agriculture, or a closely related science or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of post-graduate professional work experience in natural or agricultural resource management. Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of post-graduate professional work experience creating maps from field data in professional Geographical Information System software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online or QGIS ).

  • Experience leading staff while conducting ecological tasks in the field.

  • Experience implementing methods for control of little fire ants or other invasive species, utilizing chemical, biological and/or mechanical control techniques.

  • Must have experience conducting fieldwork and accurately recording, entering, proofing data, and simple data analysis.

  • Ability to use compass, maps, data tablets, smartphone applications, and GPS .

  • Must be in good physical condition, and capable of walking several consecutive miles while carrying gear of up to 35 pounds in a hot tropical environment on uneven terrain.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • More than two (2) years’ work experience with natural or agricultural resource management.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by prior experience documenting field activities and writing technical reports and SOPs.

  • More than two (2) years’ work experience managing and analyzing geospatial data using ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online.

  • Experience creating, editing and managing mobile data collection applications (ArcGIS Survey123, ESRI FieldMaps), etc.

  • Experience with biological monitoring of Federal Threatened and Endangered Species.

  • Ability to take photographs and collect biological samples for identification.

  • Experience working in the Pacific region or other tropical ecosystems in the biological, natural resources, or agricultural fields.

  • Familiarity with DOD /Navy environmental and safety regulations.

  • Familiarity with maintaining pesticide records and pesticide safety protocols.

  • Possession of Guam CORE or equivalent State pest control applicator’s license.

  • Implement field sampling and insect control program under direction CEMML Supervisory Entomologist.

  • Lead a team of at least two (2) Biological Technicians in completion of assigned tasks.

  • Conduct a variety of invasive and endangered species monitoring and operational management activities.

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures for the control of little fire ants including surveys, site preparation and pesticide application.

  • Operates tools and equipment commonly used in ecological resource management, which may include but is not limited to, hand tools, weed and brush cutters, radios, smart phone applications, and global navigation satellite system ( GNSS ) receivers.

  • Responsible for care and maintenance of field equipment.

  • Maintains accountability for field supplies and equipment.

  • Follow all CSU , CEMML and military installation environmental and safety protocols.

  • Position requires physical exertion to operate equipment and carry supplies and materials long distances over uneven terrain.

  • Long periods of standing, walking over rough uneven surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, digging, or similar activities in tropical environments are expected.

  • Provides quality control of staff data inputs into the computer database through daily uploads of field data collected on computer data tablets and smart phone applications.

  • Responsible for maintenance of proper pesticide PPE , safe and accurate pesticide mixing, handling, storage, record keeping and reporting to the military Pesticide Reporting system.

  • Responsible for care and maintenance of pesticide application equipment.

  • Cleans, sorts and labels target and non-target ant specimens by collection locale, date and survey type.

  • Regularly and routinely communicate via in-person meetings, tele/video conferences, and email to provide CEMML Supervisory Entomologist with progress updates and coordinates to schedule field activities and report pesticide use.

  • Coordinate closely with military, construction and DoD civilian personnel to schedule authorizations to access to work sites on military lands.

  • Provide weekly and monthly activity requests to DoD Facility Managers.
