Special Information

  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Job Description

Oversees the creation and development of radio content, production, and development of feature stories for the University\'s public radio station. In this position you will create and develop radio content, report, oversee newscast content, deliver features, edit, fill in on-air.

Program Management - 35%

  • Oversees all newscast content.
  • Directs and coordinates planning, development, production, and scheduling of local news stories.
  • Fields program and story ideas from the public.
  • Participates in on-air fundraising.
  • Maintains FCC Public File Issues List.

Supervisory - 25%

  • Leads the local desk in the news department including supervising the activities of local reporting/newscast production staff.
  • Assigns, supervises, edits and reports local news stories, including local features and spot news.

Reporting - 25%

  • Reports on issues of local significance, adhering to the highest standards of public radio journalism.
  • Performs on-air responsibilities such as hosting live and pre-recorded air shifts including Morning Ediiton and All Things Considered.

Community Emgagement and Communication - 10%

  • Represents the station at community, university and professional gatherings and meetings.
  • Provides program information for KNAU website and eblasts.
  • Posts archival audio and supplies ancillary materials.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Broadcasting, Communications or related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years experience as a news reporter and / or editor.
  • Two years of related supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Must have an excellent working knowledge of local news and public affairs production.
  • Thorough knowledge and familiarity with public radio programming.
  • Knowledge about northern Arizona as well as in-depth knowledge of state, regional, national and international issues.

Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.

Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability and thorough knowledge of the highest journalism and editorial standards.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the tate of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees\' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report{target="blank"}. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report{target="blank"} is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing.
